August 22, 2015 Release Part 2: Spotlight on red wines

I found lots of interest in the reds from the August 22 release and have chosen ten wines. Beginning with a very good Niagara Bordeaux-style red blend from Thirty Bench, I follow with two from Bordeaux proper, a Malbec from Cahors, and a well-priced base Bourgogne. The Pinot theme continues with a Pinot Noir from Alto Adige, the first of five Italian wines. This is followed by a Barbera d’Alba and three Tuscans.

THIRTY BENCH RED 2013, VQA Niagara Peninsula

Vintages #320986 • $24.00 • 750ml. • 89/100
2013 proves to be a very successful vintage for this dependable blend. It's slightly Merlot-dominant (39%) with roughly equal parts of the two Cabernets. The enticing nose fills with blackberry, black cherry and plum fruit, with just a hint of green herbs and cedar, and underpinned by suggestions of black earth and coffee-vanilla oak spice. The wine is well-structured, with elevated acidity, balanced alcohol and softening elevated tannins that build on the mid-palate. Decant now, or hold for a year or two. This is a very approachable Bordeaux-style blend, perhaps just a touch soft and sweet — surprising for this cooler vintage — but attractive and pleasing.

CHÂTEAU LA BIENFAISANCE 2010, AC Saint-Émilion Grand Cru

Vintages #403451 • $39.95 • 750ml. • 90/100
This is a fine representative of good quality Right Bank Bordeaux. Fruit is fully ripe, but the nose maintains a pleasant herbal and fennel character, with a menthol lift. The wine is dry, with slightly elevated acidity and alcohol, and ripe but noticeable tannins. The black currant, blackberry and plum fruit fill the palate, and the finish builds with a cedar and earthy undertone. Decant for current drinking, or cellar for at least a year of two. A fine wine.

CHÂTEAU DES MOINES MENODIN 2010, AC Bordeaux Supérieur

Vintages #424259 • $14.95 • 750ml. • 88/100
There is lots going on in this Bordeaux Supérieur from the warm 2010 vintage. You'll find very ripe cherry, blackberry, black currant and plum fruit, some cedary wood resin, and roasted coffee and dry earth underneath. The wine is dry, with balanced acidity and alcohol, and ripe, softening tannins that still build a little on the mid palate. Perhaps there is more fruit extraction than appropriate for elegance, but for the price this wine certainly exceeds expectation.

CHÂTEAU VINCENS ORIGINE CAHORS AC 2012

Vintages #343400 • $17.95 • 750ml. • 88/100
Cahors is the French home of Malbec, and it's a treat to find an example here in Ontario. Pretty floral-violet aromas combine with lifted blackberry and black currant fruit, twigs and black earth. Slightly elevated acidity and alcohol are balanced the fine, dusty tannins. Robust fruit flavours become earthy and dusty on the finish. Leaning towards the modern, with its feet planted firmly in Cahors, this should be of interest to fans of Bordeaux and Argentina.

DOMAINE DE ROCHEBIN VIEILLES VIGNES BOURGOGNE PINOT NOIR 2013, AC Bourgogne

Vintages #424275 • $22.95 • 750ml. • 88/100
This charming basic red Burgundy delivers everything you could hope for. Vibrant black cherry, blackberry, raspberry fruit fill the nose, with an herbal-pepper element backed by the scent of dry leaves, and a light spicy cinnamon and clove nuance. Very dry, with crisp acidity, moderate alcohol and soft tannins, the palate is clean, driven by the cherry, berry and spice flavours, with a light, fresh and stony-mineral finish. An excellent value indeed.

ALOIS LAGEDER MIMUÈT RISERVA PINOT NOIR 2012, DOC Alto Adige

Vintages #424150 • $27.95 • 750ml. • 89/100
Alto Adige is a cooler region in northern Italy, high in the Alps and bordering Austria to the north. While it is known for lighter bodied red wines from Schiava and Lagrein, Pinot Nero (Pinot Noir) is growing in popularity, and this example should pique your interest. The wine is medium ruby-garnet, showing garnet on the rim. Lively aromas suggest fresh but ripe cherries, strawberries and raspberries, with cherry blossoms, dry earth and baking spices (nutmeg and cinnamon), in a slightly oaky frame. The wine is dry, with fresh acidity that carries the fruit into a menthol lift on the finish. Very fresh, crisp and elegant.

MARCHESI DI BAROLO RUVEI BARBERA D'ALBA DOC 2013

Vintages #168203 • $19.95 • 750ml. • 88/100
Barbera is planted widely in Italy, but is best known as a varietal wine in Piedmont, second in status to Nebbiolo. It is characterised as having high acidity and moderate tannins. This example presents rich aromas of ripe fruit: black cherries, raspberries, blackberries and black currants, with baking spice and wet clay. Bright acidity, moderate alcohol and light, slightly chalky tannins keep the wine fresh and vibrant on the palate. A very pleasant wine especially suited to lighter meats and heavier vegetarian dishes.

MOCALI BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO DOCG 2009

Vintages #64956 • $44.95 • 750ml. • 91/100
This Brunello is beginning to show some maturity, but still has a core of freshness. Dried herbs, cedar, earth and leather underlie aromas of ripe raspberry, blackberry, plum and cherry. The wine is nicely structured, with elevated acidity and alcohol to balance the tannins that build with some grip and a lightly grainy texture. There is still some fresh and sweet fruit alongside the savoury and leathery flavours that suggest the beginnings of bottle age. Worth cellaring for at least three to five years, and be sure to decant for earlier drinking.

CASTELLO D'ALBOLA RISERVA CHIANTI CLASSICO DOCG 2011

Vintages #315150 • $24.95 • 750ml. • 89/100
Here is a very attractively priced Reserva Chianti Classico. You will find some freshness on the nose, with cherry, blackberry and plum fruit aromas, some earthy-mushroom notes and a cedary underpinning. Nicely structured, with firm acidity, and grippy tannins that are beginning to soften, the palate is rich and is beginning to show leather and earth on the finish.

CASTELLANI FILICHETO VINO NOBILE DI MONTEPULCIANO DOCG 2011

Vintages #184937 • $18.95 • 750ml. • 88.5/100
The 2011 vintage in Tuscany was dominated by a heat wave in August, that led to a very early harvest, and in some cases a lack of freshness. But this wine faired well. It is showing the beginnings of garnet on the rim of the almost-deep ruby-red core. Delicate floral-violet aromas rise above fresh, ripe and sweet cherry and blackberry fruit, underlined by dried herbs and cedar. The wine is nicely balanced: dry, with brisk acidity, moderate alcohol and softening, lightly grained tannins. Al in all, a very good wine at an excellent price. A fine value.
