November 28, 2015 Vintages Release Part 2: white wines

In Part 2 of this release I focus on white wines, beginning with a very good-value Crémant de Bourgogne. This is followed by a fine Trocken Riesling from the Rheingau, and two excellent Sauvignon Blancs, the first a Sancerre from Jean-Max Roger, and the second a very fine oaked Sauvignon Blanc from producer Spy Valley in the Waihopai Valley, Marlborough.

I end with four Chardonnays, highlighted by an exceptionally fine Chardonnay from producer Cloudy Bay in Marlborough. This is followed by another good New Zealand Chardonnay from Trinity Hill (Gimblett Gravels on the North Island), and I end with two good value wines from Henry of Pelham in Ontario and Vignerons de Buxy from Marsannay in the Côte Chalonnaise.

BAILLY LAPIERRE RÉSERVE BRUT CRÉMANT DE BOURGOGNE , Méthode Traditionnelle, AC

Vintages #991562 • $19.95 • 750ml. • 89/100
This is a very competent Chardonnay-based crémant. The wine is medium straw-yellow, with a yeasty-toasty nose that presents bright fruit suggesting lemons, green apples, pears and a hint of berries. The crisp acidity nicely complements the rich brioche, toast and hazelnut tones on the palate, and carries the lemon-lime and apple flavours into the toasty-nutty finish. Very good value.

KÜNSTLER HOCHHEIMER STIELWEG OLD VINES RIESLING TROCKEN 2013, Qualitätswein

Vintages #425041 • $42.95 • 750ml. • 92/100
This is a tour de force! You will find lovely Riesling complexity on the nose: red apples, Meyer lemon, melon, apricot, honey and beeswax. But the wine is dry, with crisp acidity and stony minerality underlying the lovely fruit on the palate, while a savoury-waxy element dominates the finish. A very compelling wine.

JEAN-MAX ROGER CUVÉE G.C. SANCERRE AC 2014

Vintages #189126 • $28.95 • 750ml. • 90/100
Jean-Max Roger is a premium producer of Sancerre, and this wine is from the Grand Chemarin vineyard in the village of Bué. The nose is expressive and complex, suggesting earthy bell pepper, jalapenos, cut grass, dry herbs, lemon-lime and green apple, with a flinty minerality etched deeply underneath. The palate is crisp and very dry, and as the herbaceous elements recede into the background, the more straight-forward lemon-lime, grapefruit and green apple fruit drives into a salty-mineral finish. A lovely expression of Sancerre.

SPY VALLEY ENVOY SAUVIGNON BLANC 2013, Waihopai Valley, Marlborough, South Island

Vintages #429308 • $29.95 • 750ml. • 91/100
This is an exciting oaked Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. The nose is very intense, with smoke, cedary resin, lemon, grapefruit and white peach aromas. High acidity provides the backbone that carries the crisp, fresh and complex fruit — grapefruit, lemon and peach, with slightly resinous underpinnings — and leads into an herbal-mineral finish. Ideally the wine would undergo another year or two of bottle aging, but it is quite lovely right now.

CLOUDY BAY CHARDONNAY 2012, Marlborough, South Island

Vintages #359513 • $35.95 • 750ml. • 93/100
This is a premium Chardonnay from Cloudy Bay. There is a lovely smoky frame surrounding notes of lemon curd and yellow apples — rich, yet crisp and enticing. The wine has elevated acidity, balanced alcohol, a core of rich lactic notes that are underlaid by a crisp and lively mineral-infused palate. This is a wonderful wine: harmonious, generous, and yet with finely etched detail that gives a real elegance.

TRINITY HILL GIMBLETT GRAVELS CHARDONNAY 2013, Hawkes Bay, North Island

Vintages #415125 • $33.95 • 750ml. • 90/100
This is an attractive oaked Chardonnay, with aromas of lemon, yellow apples and white flowers backed by vanilla and light toasty notes. Brisk acidity and moderate alcohol support the fruit on the palate, layered over vanilla and oak spice, all converging into a stony-mineral finish. A very good effort.

HENRY OF PELHAM ESTATE CHARDONNAY 2013, VQA Short Hills Bench, Niagara Peninsula

Vintages #268342 • $19.95 • 750ml. • 89/100
Smoky vanilla, lemon and yellow apple aromas set the tone. While the oak influence on the palate is still rather dominant, it is beginning to integrate quite nicely, balanced by brisk acidity. This is an excellent value for an oaked Chardonnay.

VIGNERONS DE BUXY BUISSONNIER MONTAGNY AC 2013

Vintages #382879 • $19.95 • 750ml. • 88/100
This is an unoaked Chardonnay from Montagny in the Côte Chalonnaise. On the nose I found lightly leesy lemon curd and yellow apple aromas, with an impression of stony minerality. The wine is dry, with crisp acidity and balanced alcohol, and a light lactic texture gives a suggestion of richness. The yellow apple and lemon flavours linger into a stony finish. Very good value.
