Vintages January 23, 2016 Release Part 3: seven more wines of interest

There is no theme for the final seven wines I want to highlight from this release, except that in one way or another they interested me.

The first is a fine grower’s champagne from Delouvin-Bagnost, which I think gives lots of complexity and pleasure for what amounts to an “entry level” price for Champagne. The second is a good rosé Crémant de Bourgogne from Louis Bouillot. Then two value-priced white wines follow: the 2013 Langenlois Grüner Veltliner from Rabl, and the 2014 les Vignes de Saint-Laurent-L’Abbaye Pouilly-Fumé from Domaine Chatelaine. Finally I present three reds from the new world. The first two are Shiraz from South Australia and Victoria: the 2012 Shingleback Davey Estate Shiraz, and the 2013 Fowles Stone Dwellers Shiraz.  The final wine is a very accessible Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2014 Single Vineyard el Recurso Block 18, from Cono Sur.

DELOUVIN-BAGNOST BRUT CHAMPAGNE , Récoltant-Manipulant, Vandières, AC

Vintages #385369 • $44.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 91/100
This is a lovely Grower's Champagne, from a Récoltant-Manipulant who produces wines only from grapes grown on their own estate. It pours medium straw with glints of old gold. Toast, brioche and yeasty aromas are backed by crisp lemon and green apple, white flowers and stony minerality. High acidity drives the palate, where the toasty-brioche aromas turn into flavours of sourdough bread, with heightened lemon and green apple fruit, and a long, mineral finish. This is an excellent example of a crisp, fresh style that still has lots of autolytic character and complexity. It is also very attractively priced.

LOUIS BOUILLOT PERLE D'AURORE BRUT ROSÉ CRÉMANT DE BOURGOGNE , Méthode Traditionnelle, AC

Vintages #48793 • $19.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 88/100
This is a pleasant sparkling rosé from Burgundy. The wine is light salmon in colour with bright lemon, strawberry, raspberry and fragrant red apple aromas with just a hint of toast and bread dough. The fruit is fresh and tart on the palate, where the crisp acidity leads into a lightly mineral finish. Very good value indeed.

RABL LANGENLOIS GRÜNER VELTLINER 2013, Kamptal

Vintages #377457 • $16.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 89.5/100
This is a fine introduction to "Grüner". It is medium straw with glints of yellow. The nose is lemony, with green apples, an earthy-vegetal undertone, and wet-stone minerality. Brisk acidity, moderate alcohol and a medium body perfectly frame the palate, which shows just a little more richness than the nose suggests, with lightly herbal notes gracing the fresh lemon and green apple, and drying into a mineral finish. If you don't know Grüner this is a fine way to try it, and if you do love the grape, then you will understand the attraction here!

DOMAINE CHATELAIN LES VIGNES DE SAINT-LAURENT-L'ABBAYE POUILLY FUMÉ AC 2014

Vintages #958801 • $19.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 88.5/100
Here is a pleasant Fumé Blanc. Fairly simple fresh herbs and grapefruit define the nose, with some depth from stony-earthy undertones. On the palate the green herbs are supplemented by suggestions of cut grass and green peppers, although the grapefruit flavours dominate, and lead to a grapefruit and mineral finish. Very good value.

SHINGLEBACK DAVEY ESTATE SHIRAZ 2012, McLaren Vale, South Australia

Vintages #431296 • $23.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 89/100
This is a wine that shows the warmth of the McLaren Vale. It is deep and dark, with a narrow violet rim. While there is lots of ripe to over-ripe cherry, plum and blackberry fruit, the is also a seam of woody, cedary resin, with dried herbs and baking spices. Alcohohl is warm, acidity is moderate, and tannins are elevated but softening. If you hanker for those big, warming reds with sweet fruit and spice, but like a little contrasting herbal-savoury character as well, this wine will suit.

FOWLES STONE DWELLERS SHIRAZ 2013, Strathbogie Ranges, Victoria

Vintages #265967 • $19.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 89/100
Here is another fine offering from the dependable Fowles Winery. This is a deep purple wine that shows a youthful violet rim. It has a vibrant mint-herbal-eucalyptus attack, leading into a core of blackberry and plum fruit with a garnish of chocolate. The wine is fully dry, with elevated alcohol and pleasant silky tannins, balanced by good acidity. The rich fruit and herbal notes carry into a long, juicy finish. An excellent value indeed.

CONO SUR SINGLE VINEYARD EL RECURSO BLOCK 18 CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2014, Maipo Valley

Vintages #439364 • $18.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 88/100
This is an appealing Cabernet Sauvignon, with pleasant raspberry, blackberry and black currant fruit, mostly ripe, but some slightly candied notes as well. On the palate you'll find generous sweet fruit, framed by slightly elevated acidity, alcohol and tannins, with notes of dry earth, wood resin, coffee and chocolate. Good value.
