Eight recommended white wines

"This collection of eight high quality white wines from around the world has something for everyone, all at very reasonable prices ... "

Wines available from July 23, 2016

This collection of white wines has something for everyone, all at very reasonable prices — five of the eight are actually under $20.00, and the other three are only slightly more.

The first three are Sauvignon Blancs: a Sancerre (the 2014 from Roger & Didier Raimbault), a Marlborough (the 2015 Stoneleigh Lattitude), and an interesting local example from Niagara (the 2013 Jackson-Triggs Niagara Estate Grand Reserve).

The remaining five wines are from five different grape varieties and four countries:

  • a very good base Chablis, the 2014 William Fèvre Champs Royaux Chablis;
  • a fine Pinot Grigio from Alto-Adige, northern Italy, the 2014 Tiefenbrunner Pinot Grigio, IGT Vigneti delle Dolomiti;
  • an intrighuing Albariño from Rias Baixas in Spain, the 2015 Maetierra Atlantis Albariño;
  • a Niagara Riesling, the 2012 Redstone Limestone Vineyard South Riesling; and
  • an appealing Gewürztraminer from the Okanagan, the 2014 Quails’ Gate Gewürztraminer.

ROGER & DIDIER RAIMBAULT SANCERRE AC 2014

Vintages #82255 • $26.95 • 750ml. • 90/100
This is a textbook Sancerre. While you will certainly find hints of lime, lime zest, green apples and a sprinkling of green herbs on the nose, those aromas dance on the edges of a core of chalk and limestone. That foretells the perfect structure: bone dry, with high acidity, modest alcohol and a firm texture — that transforms the tart apple and lime fruit on the palate into chalky stones and mineral on the finish. Very fine.

STONELEIGH LATITUDE SAUVIGNON BLANC 2015, Marlborough, South Island

Vintages #324228 • $21.95 • 750ml. • 89/100
Stoneleigh comes through again with another exemplary edition of their Latitude Sauvignon Blanc. It treads that fine line between herbaceousness and fruit — slightly sweaty, yet with crisp, fresh lemon, grapefruit, melon and a hint of pineapple. The structure is spot on: dry, with brisk acidity, moderate alcohol, and a medium body with just enough breadth to balance the lingering acidity. This displays lots of the mainstream character for Marlborough in this price range, but with a little more refinement and focus.

JACKSON-TRIGGS NIAGARA ESTATE GRAND RESERVE SAUVIGNON BLANC 2013, VQA Niagara Peninsula

Vintages #367797 • $19.95 • 750ml. • 88/100
There is a little cult of Sauvignon Blanc in Niagara, and winemaker Marco Piccoli of Jackson-Triggs is one of its members. Not imitating New Zealand, the Loire or California, it's an expression of Niagara: well-structured, with some generosity, but still vibrant. Acidity is firm, alcohol is balanced and there is some richness on the palate. Ripe apple and melon fruit are accompanied by a lemony tang and a light herbal (but not vegetal) element. Expand your Sauvignon Blanc experience with this local offering!

WILLIAM FÈVRE CHAMPS ROYAUX CHABLIS AC 2014

Vintages #461640 • $25.95 • 750ml. • 89/100
William Fèvre's base Chablis from the excellent 2014 vintage is a stony-mineral, lemon and green apple infused wine. It is dry, with characteristic high acidity and modest alcohol. A light lactic note on the palate adds some breadth to balance the taut acidity, keeping the wine from austerity. This is an excellent base Chablis, and well worth the price of entry.

TIEFENBRUNNER PINOT GRIGIO 2014, IGT Vigneti delle Dolomiti

Vintages #458208 • $19.95 • 750ml. • 89/100
This is a fine Pinot Grigio from Trentino-Alto Adige. Aromas of crisp red apple, lemon, melon and white flowers are tinged with a stony minerality. The wine is dry, with brisk acidity, modest alcohol and a medium body, but with a lightly creamy texture that adds richness to balance the freshness. A hint of phenolic bitterness adds to the lingering minerality on the finish. This is a great value, and far above the norm of "typical" Pinot Grigio available at lower prices.

MAETIERRA ATLANTIS ALBARIÑO 2015, DO Rîas Baixas

Vintages #452078 • $15.95 • 750ml. • 88.5/100
The wine is medium straw, featuring complex aromas of lemon, grapefruit, red apples, melon and peaches, lightly floral, with a stony mineral undertone. The wine is bone dry, with fresh acidity and moderate alcohol, but with a generosity on the palate that balances the acidity and showcases the fruit, and then tightens on the finish with a hint of apple skin bitterness and stony minerality. This is an excellent value indeed.

REDSTONE LIMESTONE VINEYARD SOUTH RIESLING 2012, VQA Twenty Mile Bench, Niagara Peninsula

Vintages #381251 • $19.20 • 750ml. • 88/100
Here is another Niagara Riesling that is riding the sweet-tart profile that is so widely adopted these days. The wine is significantly off-dry, with high acidity that keeps the palate fresh and lively. Aromas of apple blossoms, lime, red apples, peaches and honey, with notes of rubber-petrol, translate onto the palate. Pleasant and approachable.

QUAILS' GATE GEWURZTRAMINER 2014, BC VQA Okanagan Valley

Vintages #354480 • $17.95 • 750ml. • 88/100
This is an appealing Gewürztraminer, with pretty aromas of white flowers and apple blossoms, red apples, grapefruit and peaches. The wine is off-dry, but there is enough acidity to keep the palate lively and quite fresh. The floral and fruit flavours carry into a lengthy finish. This is an appealing fruit-and-floral wine that keeps a sense of balance. Great as a sipper, it will also pair well with mildly spicy Thai dishes.
