Six red wines and five rosés

"Three North American Pinot Noirs, three reds from Spain and Portugal, and five French rosés provide a good mix of excellence and value from this release."

available from August 20, 2016

Three North American Pinot Noirs and three red wines from the Iberian Peninsula composer the six red wines of recommendations from the August 20 release. Norman Hardie’s exceptional 2014 Unfiltered County Pinot Noir headlines the roster, followed by a very good Oregon Pinot Noir from a Burgundian producer, the 2013 Domaine Drouhin Pinot Noir, Dundee Hills, and a pleasant entry-level Pinot also from Oregon, the 2014 Underwood Pinot Noir.

The other three reds are an unoaked Touriga Nacional blend from the Douro region (the 2011 Nova de Nossa Senhora do Carmo Colheita Tinto), a modern, fruit-forward Rioja (the 2011 Izadi Reserva), and an approachable Granache blend from Montsant (the 2014 Celler de Capçanes Mas Donís Barrica Old Vines).

The five rosé wines I recommend are all French. These are

  • the 2015 Gérard Bertrand Côte des Roses Rosé from Languedoc;
  • the 2015 Delas Saint-Esprit from the Côtes du Rhône;
  • the 2015 Famille Perrin Réserve Rosé from the Côtes du Rhône;
  • the 2015 Henri Bourgeois Petit Bourgeois Rosé from the Val de Loire; and
  • the 2015 Château Bellevue La Forêt Rosé from Fronton near Toulouse.

2014 NORMAN HARDIE COUNTY UNFILTERED PINOT NOIR, VQA Prince Edward County

Vintages #125310 • $45.20 • 750ml. • 91/100
Norman Hardie continues to develop the benchmarks for Prince Edward County Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. His 2014 Pinot is medium ruby-red, still showing ruby on the rim. Vibrant blackberry and black cherry fruit aromas centre light florality, mint, cedar, turned earth and dry leaves. The palate is lean and finely etched, defined by vivid acidity, modest alcohol and slightly chalky tannins. The savoury, earthy elements balance the fruit, and a chalky, limestone minerality builds on the lengthy finish. This isn't Burgundy — it's the County, and quite unique.

2013 DOMAINE DROUHIN PINOT NOIR, Dundee Hills

Vintages #961284 • $52.95 • 750ml. • 90/100
This is a premium Pinot Noir from Domaine Drouhin's Oregon estate. The wine is translucent ruby-garnet, with a light floral lift, and bright raspberry, cranberry and cherry fruit. Firm acidity and fine, lightly grippy tannins carry the bright fruit, while an earthy, dry-leaf element adds interest. A fruit-forward style that still has good Pinot character, in that "new world meets old world" style that Oregon is so good at.

2014 UNDERWOOD OREGON GROWN PINOT NOIR, Oregon

Vintages #421198 • $21.95 • 750ml. • 87.5/100
This is an entry-level Pinot Noir from Oregon. The wine is medium ruby-garnet, showing garnet on the rim. Pretty floral notes and aromas of strawberry, raspberry and cherry fruit are complemented by an earthy undertone. Crisp acidity and light tannins balance moderate alcohol, but the main caveat here is that the wine has a little too much residual sugar for real elegance. Despite that hint of sweetness, the finish dries with tart fruit character and the underlying fine tannins. This is a pretty good value, and I think it will be widely appealing.

2011 QUINTA NOVA DE NOSSA SENHORA DO CARMO COLHEITA TINTO, DOC Douro

Vintages #452748 • $19.95 • 750ml. • 88.5/100
This is an unoaked Touriga Nacional blend from the Douro. The wine is deep ruby-purple, with ripe blackberry, blueberry and plum fruit dominating the nose. Dry with a little sweetness peaking through, acidity is balanced and alcohol shows a little heat on the mid-palate. Hints of earth and the beginnings of a leathery evolution are starting to show on the palate, but it's still mostly about the vibrant, ripe fruit. Tannins are surprisingly grippy, though fine-grained, and build on the fruit-filled finish. Very attractive and approachable.

2011 IZADI RESERVA, DOCa Rioja

Vintages #461269 • $19.95 • 750ml. • 88/100
This modern, fruit forward Rioja is 100% Tempranillo, and is aged 14 months in oak (about 70% American, the balance French, with 20% new). The wine is rather deep ruby-red. Subtle cedar and resin notes appear immediately on the nose, with ripe cherry, blackberry and plum fruit emerging, and hints of earth and leather underneath. On the palate the fruit remains forward through to the finish, overlaying a fine-grained tannic base. Very good value.

2014 CELLER DE CAPÇANES MAS DONÍS BARRICA OLD VINES, DO Montsant

Vintages #705863 • $17.95 • 750ml. • 87.5/100
Montsant is in southern Catalonia, surrounding Priorat, west of Barcelona. This is a Garnacha blend, with 15% Syrah — a deep ruby-purple, as are so many Garnachas that we see these days from Spain. Ripe to slightly jammy blackberry, black currant, blueberry and plum fruit with vanilla and spice fill the nose, and replay vividly on the palate. Alcohol is slightly elevated although heat is constrained, acidity is balanced, and tannins are fine, growing towards the finish. The wine is highly extracted to be sure, but the fruit is rich and mouth-filling, and will work well with outdoor barbecues. Broadly appealing, and at an excellent price.

2015 GÉRARD BERTRAND CÔTE DES ROSES ROSÉ, AP Languedoc

Vintages #373985 • $18.95 • 750ml. • 88.5/100
This light salmon-pink coloured rosé is a blend of Grenache, Cinsault and Syrah from the Languedoc. Notes of apple blossoms, red apple perfume, Meyer lemon and candied berries on the nose replay on the palate, with a crushed stone minerality gathering on the finish. This is a pitch-perfect, mid-weight rosé, with crisp acidity and very light tannins that complement the modest alcohol. I don't like the fancy, slightly heavy bottle, but many people may.

2015 DELAS SAINT-ESPRIT CÔTES-DU-RHÔNE ROSÉ AC

Vintages #224964 • $16.95 • 750ml. • 88.5/100
This blend of mostly Grenache, Syrah and Cinsault hails from the communes of Sainte-Cécile-les-Vignes and Rochegude in the Côtes de Rhône. Bright raspberry, cherry and red apple fruit with lavender-infused garrigue on the nose take on some weight and richness on the palate. This is a little more full-bodied than many rosés, but the firm acidity and very light tannins balance the alcohol. Very good.

2015 FAMILLE PERRIN RÉSERVE ROSÉ, AC Côtes du Rhône

Vintages #719062 • $15.95 • 750ml. • 88/100
This is a good, well-made Côtes de Rhône rosé, a blend of Cinsault, Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah from Perrin's Le Grand Prébois vineyard in Orange. The wine is light salmon in hue. Aromas of red apple, lemon and raspberry fruit entwine with apple blossom and garrigue. The wine is bone dry, with enough acidity to nicely balance the alcohol, while the fruit and herbs on the palate are textured with a hint of tannin and stony minerality. Very good.

2015 HENRI BOURGEOIS PETIT BOURGEOIS ROSÉ, IGP Vin de Pays du Val de Loire

Vintages #450791 • $17.95 • 750ml. • 87.5/100
This is a lighter salmon-pink rosé from the Loire. The grape is Pinot Noir, macerated for several days prior to pressing, and then fermented at cool temperatures. Grapefruit, raspberry and cherry fruit, with notes of green herbs, fill the nose. The palate is fresh and crisp, the fruit is more tart than the nose suggests, while a hint of apple skin tannin adds some texture. The fruit, savoury herbs and stony minerality linger on the finish. A light and approachable rosé.

2015 CHÂTEAU BELLEVUE LA FORÊT ROSÉ, AP Fronton

Vintages #219840 • $14.95 • 750ml. • 87.5/100
The wine is 65% Négrette, a local grape that grows in Fronton near Toulouse, supplemented by Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Gamay and Cabernet Franc. Light floral and dry herb notes complement core aromas of grapefruit, strawberry and raspberry fruit. The palate is round and slightly soft, with a lemon-apple mid-palate and a pleasant fruit-filled finish. Fruit-forward and approachable.
