A rosé and six red wines

"A rosé, two Riojas, two Pinot Noirs (from the Okanagan and Burgundy), a Niagara Cabernet Franc and a Cabernet Sauvignon from Stellenbosch ..."

available from September 3, 2016

It’s still rosé season — which for me is all year round, anyway — so I begin with a rosé from the Côtes de Provence. Of my six recommended red wines, two are Tempranillos from Rioja, two are Pinot Noirs (Okanagan and Burgundy), followed by a Niagara Cabernet Franc and a fine Cabernet Sauvignon from Stellenbosch.

2015 MIMI EN PROVENCE GRANDE RÉSERVE ROSÉ, AP Côtes de Provence

Vintages #452573 • $18.95 • 750ml. • 88.5/100
This light pink rosé from Provence is a blend of Grenache, Cinsault and Syrah. Aromas of apple blossoms and red apple perfume are accompanied by notes of strawberries, raspberries and dried herbs. The palate is nicely balanced, with bright acidity and very light tannins, with the savoury elements growing and entwining with the berry fruit, ending in a dry herbal and savoury finish. A little more interest here than the norm.

2009 CUNE GRAN RESERVA, DOCa Rioja

Vintages #393553 • $39.95 • 750ml. • 90/100
This Rioja, sourced from vineyards in the Rioja Alta sub region, is 85% Tempranillo, blended with Graciano and Mazuelo (Carignan). The mid to deep ruby-red wine looks quite youthful for its age. Cherry and blackberry fruit is still quite fresh, lightly floral, and just starting to show leathery and tobacco notes. Fine silky tannins and crisp acidity underlie the fruit on the palate, where evolution is just setting in. This is a refined and elegant Rioja (possibly refreshed with younger wine, as permitted), that is worth its premium price.

2010 VIÑA REAL RESERVA, DOCa Rioja

Vintages #94896 • $21.95 • 750ml. • 89/100
This Rioja is from the Alavesa sub region, 90% Tempranillo with the balance a blend of Garnacha, Graciano and Mazuelo. The wine is rather deep ruby-purple, showing red on the rim. Ripe blackberry, black currant and cherry fruit aromas are supplemented by hints of vanilla, oak resin, green herbs, spice and smoky dried meat. The wine is quite fresh on the palate, with bright acidity, balanced alcohol, and fine, persistent tannins, but is beginning to show some leathery evolution. This is a rather modern and nicely balanced Rioja, and provides a great value. Very drinkable in the short term, it will also cellar for another three to five years without any problem.

2014 QUAILS' GATE PINOT NOIR, BC VQA Okanagan Valley

Vintages #585760 • $27.95 • 750ml. • 89/100
This is the 2014 vintage of the dependable Quail's Gate Pinot Noir. Mid ruby-red, with significant garnet colouring, the fresh but ripe cranberry, black cherry and blackberry fruit notes carriy a smoky, mineral edge and an earthy underntone. Crisp acidity and fine tannins define the palate, where the fresh fruit takes on a light savoury-herbal component, and the light lingering tannins underscore the crisp black fruit finish. An Okanagan benchmark.

2014 LOUIS MAX CÔTES DE NUITS-VILLAGES AC

Vintages #445312 • $29.95 • 750ml. • 89/100
This is a very good regional red Burgundy, sourced from grapes from the villages located at the north and south ends of the Côtes de Nuits. The wine is medium ruby-red, beginning to show garnet on the rim. Bright but still earthy cranberry, raspberry, cherry and blackberry fruit aromas are graced by notes of cinnamon and cloves. The wine is dry, with fresh acidity, balanced alcohol and slightly elevated grippy tannins. The fruit is dense on the palate, the finish is lengthy with drying fruit and tannins. A very good value from Burgundy.

2013 FIELDING ESTATE CABERNET FRANC, VQA Niagara Peninsula

Vintages #36194 • $21.95 • 750ml. • 88.5/100
This is a Niagara-appropriate style of Cabernet Franc, showing fresh and bright raspberry, blackberry, cherry and plum fruit aromas. Some "green" herbal and cedary notes emerge with time, along with a hint of vanilla, and light undertones of dry leaves and turned earth. The palate is crisp and light, with fruit character that suggests both tart and ripe elements, modest alcohol and fine tannins, whose persistence nicely balances the brisk acidity, continuing into the firm and stony finish. Good work by winemaker Richie Roberts!

2014 RUSTENBERG STELLENBOSCH CABERNET SAUVIGNON, WO Simonsberg-Stellenbosch

Vintages #443374 • $19.95 • 750ml. • 89/100
The wine is deep ruby-red, having lost most of its youthful purple, and shows red on its narrow rim. Aromas of ripe black currant, blackberry and plum fruit are accompanied by notes of tobacco leaf, dry earth and dry leaves. The wine is big and bold, with balanced acidity and alcohol, and elevated but softening tannins that underscore the rich, dense black fruit, and maintain their presence through to the lengthy finish. This is a very good, ripe style of Cabernet, that stops short of over-ripeness, and maintains some real Cabernet character. It is also an exceptional value.
