Red wines from Burgundy, the Rhône, Madiran, Bordeaux and more

"... with winter weather and heavier meals, we can "up" the intensity of our red wines without taking on excessive extraction and alcohol ..."

available in Ontario after January 7, 2017

It is very possible to obtain red wines with great acidity and tannic structure without going down the road to high levels of alcohol and over-extraction, and I think these wines fit the bill. I have also rated three of the following twelve wines at 90 points, which puts them firmly in the “excellent” category.

  • 2013 Domaine Du Meix-Foulot Clos Du Château De Montaigu Mercurey 1er Cru
  • 2012 Marquis De Montferrat Saint-Joseph AC
  • 2009 Château Bouscassé AP Madiran

All three are more than fairly priced, and the Madiran is an outright steal at $21.95.

The remaining nine wines include another regional red Burgundy, three wines based on Bordeaux varieties — from the right bank of Bordeaux, Chile, and Argentina — a Chianti Classico, and four Grenache blends from the south of France. All-in-all there is excellent variety here, and the wines are all priced very attractively.

DOMAINE DU MEIX-FOULOT CLOS DU CHÂTEAU DE MONTAIGU MERCUREY 1ER CRU AC 2013

Vintages #123927 • $38.95 • 750ml. • 90/100
The Clos du Château de Montaigu is a 1.9 hectare monopole of the Domaine du Meix-Foulot, just north of the small village of Saint-Martin-sous-Montaigu in Mercurey. The wine is a lighter red colour, just hinting at garnet. Spicy cinnamon, vanilla and dry earth notes surround a core of cranberry, raspberry and cherry aromas. Bright acidity and fine, chalky tannins frame the palate, where the fruit shows tart and crisp, and the tannins gather lightly on the slightly astringent earth-and-fruit-filled finish. Quite lovely. Drink now with great enjoyment, or cellar for at least five to eight years.

ROCHE DE BELLENE CUVÉE RÉSERVE PINOT NOIR BOURGOGNE AC 2014

Vintages #299859 • $21.95 • 750ml. • 88.5/100
This is a very good base Bourgogne from the dependable Roche de Bellène. The wine is medium ruby-garnet in colour, with bright cranberry, raspberry and cherry aromas, a light floral lift, with a pleasant earth and dry leaf undertone. Nicely structured, with brisk acidity and fine, persistent tannins, the fruit is ripe with a fresh, tart edge that lingers on the finish. This is an excellent value.

MARQUIS DE MONTFERRAT SAINT-JOSEPH AC 2012

Vintages #470443 • $29.95 • 750ml. • 90/100
The wine is deep ruby-red. The nose is slightly smoky and peppery, with violets, bright raspberry, blackberry and black currant fruit, over notes of dry earth and leather. It is dry, with firm acidity, medium alcohol and fine, elegant tannins. The fruit fills the palate, underpinned by the earthy and leathery notes. A very good value and good typicity for this Saint-Joseph Syrah.

CHÂTEAU BOUSCASSÉ 2009, AP Madiran

Vintages #743385 • $21.95 • 750ml. • 90/100
This is one of the great values of the January 7 realease. It is a blend of Tannat (at least 50% according to AOP rules) with Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. The wine is deep, dense ruby-red, with a very narrow red rim. Rich, ripe brambly black currant and plum fruit is backed by notes of earth and dry leaves on the nose. Firm, persistent and mouthcoating tannins are balanced by slightly elevated alcohol and acidity. The palate is big and bold, with dense fruit that is backed by a suggestion of oak-derived chocolate and roasted coffee, and carries into the lingering, tannic finish. Very good indeed — can be drunk in the shorter term with food, but will really benefit from some time in cellar.

CHÂTEAU LAGRANGE 2012, AC Lussac Saint-Émilion

Vintages #230391 • $19.95 • 750ml. • 88/100
This is a Cabernet-Sauvignon dominant blend, with 30% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot. The wine is rather deep red, with bright aromas of raspberries, blackberries and black currants. It is dry, with firm acidity, medium alcohol, and fine tannins. Light licorice and menthol notes supplement the fruit on the palate, that finishes with a light vanilla and cedary edge. Nicely structured, very drinkable, and a fine value.

ARBOLEDA CARMENÈRE 2014, Aconcagua Valley

Vintages #46284 • $19.95 • 750ml. • 88/100
This 100% Carmenère is deep ruby-red in colour. Green, herb and cedary notes accompany ripe blackberry, black currant and plum fruit on the nose. The wine is dry, with brisk acidity, elevated alcohol (although the heat is constrained), and firm tannins. Greener notes recede on the palate, leaving a cedary underpinning to the fruit. This does not try to hide its Carmenère nature. Good value.

PIATTELLI PREMIUM RESERVE MALBEC 2013, Luján de Cuyo, Mendoza

Vintages #455808 • $16.95 • 750ml. • 87.5/100
The wine is deep ruby-red with glints of purple. Peppery and slightly resinous notes presage the blackberry, black cherry and plum aromas. Firm acidity and ripe tannins balance moderately elevated alcohol, that warms the peppery, fruity and chocolate-coffee notes on the palate. Rather pretty with good overall balance. A fine value.

This pleasant Chianti is ruby-red in colour, with cherry, raspberry and blackberry aromas, and a dusting of vanilla and coffee. The wine is nicely structured, with firm acidity, balanced alcohol and fine tannins, that carry the juicy fruit and a savoury underpinning into a crisp, cedary finish. An excellent value indeed.

GABRIEL MEFFRE SAINT-BARTHÉLÉMY VACQUEYRAS AP 2014

Vintages #479691 • $25.95 • 750ml. • 89/100
This blend of mostly Grenache and Syrah is deep ruby-red in colour. Raspberry, blackberry and cherry fruit is backed by fennel, pepper and dry herbs. The wine is dry, heat from alcohol is evident but constrained, and tannins are elevated but fine and ripe. Fruit, herbs and pepper replay on the palate, and the finish is lengthy. Balanced and harmonious.
