Ten white wines and a sparkler

available after February 4, 2017 in Ontario

I’ve been able to compile an intriguing list of white wines from the February 4th Vintages release. Starting with a very good Okanagan sparkling wine, we have a fine, well-priced premier cru Chablis along with a rather Chablis-like regional white Burgundy, an excellent Savennières followed by another value-driven Chenin Blanc blend from South Africa, and a compelling Mosel Riesling Spätlese.  The remaining wines are an excellent introduction to the Greco grape from Campania, and four Sauvignon Blancs: two from New Zealand, one from Touraine, and one from Chile.

BLUE MOUNTAIN GOLD LABEL BRUT SPARKLING , Traditional method, Okanagan Valley

Vintages #206326 • $28.95 • 750ml. • 90/100
This is a traditional method sparkling wine from one of the Okanagan's most accomplished producers of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. It's based on Pinot Noir (56%) with 39% Chardonnay and 5% Pinot Gris. The wine is medium straw with glints of copper. Pleasant toast and hazelnut notes underlie bright lemon, pear and red apple aromas. The wine is dry, with residual sugar well hidden by high acidity that keeps the fruit crisp and lively on the palate, and drives into the finish with a salty-mineral bite.

LA CHABLISIENNE GRANDE CUVÉE CHABLIS 1ER CRU AC 2014

Vintages #685222 • $29.95 • 750ml. • 91/100
La Chablisienne is one of France's finest and most dependable co-operatives, representing 25% of the vineyard area in Chablis. The Grande Cuvée is an assemblage of wines from many premier cru vineyards, and is aged on fine lees in stainless steel tanks and small barrels. Aromas of green apple, lemon and lime are surrounded by light smoky and lactic notes, with a sense of crushed stones. Firm acidity is balanced by a creamy texture, that softens the bright fruit and leads to a harmonious, chalky-flinty finish. This is a compelling value for a Chablis 1er Cru wine.

SIMONNET-FEBVRE BOURGOGNE CHITRY 2014, AC Bourgogne

Vintages #479667 • $19.95 • 750ml. • 88.5/100
Simonnet-Febvre produces wines from all four levels of Chablis, but also makes wines from the Auxerrois, in this case from the village of Chitry-le-Fort, just west and south of Chablis. The wine is light straw, with flinty-smoky notes edging crisp lemon, green apple and melon aromas. Vivid acidity defines the slim, firm palate, that stops just short of austerity. This could easily pass for a regional Chablis, and is none the worse for that!

DOMAINE FL CHAMBOUREAU SAVENNIÈRES AC 2012

Vintages #470971 • $33.95 • 750ml. • 91/100
This lovely Savennières is medium yellow, with gold highlights. The nose suggests white flowers and beeswax, with a hint of resin, and then light lemon and yellow apple notes underneath. High acidity balances the robust alcohol that sits on a bone-dry frame. There is so much life on the palate: seemingly rather neutral until you begin to realize that the subtle components are edgy, driven by the acidity, the underlying minerality, and the waxy texture. The fruit replays on the palate, but that's not really the point here. Oak is present but integrating. This can certainly age for five to ten years, but is exciting to drink in its comparative youth.

AVONDALE JONTY'S DUCKS PEKIN WHITE 2015, WO Paarl

Vintages #439554 • $15.95 • 750ml. • 89/100
This is another excellent rendition of the Avondale Chenin Blanc blend Jonty's Ducks. Supporting the Chenin Blanc are smaller portions of Roussanne, Muscat de Frontignan, Viognier and Semillon. Fermentation is partly in stainless steel tanks and partly in 600 litre oak barrels, with aging on fine lees for six months. The wine is light straw, lightly floral on the nose, with lemon, lime, yellow apple and melon notes quite prominent. Firm acidity drives the palate, where a light spiciness adds complexity to the fruit, and the finish is crisp and stony. Always some interest here, with great value.

MAXIMIN GRÜNHÄUSER ABTSBERG RIESLING SPÄTLESE 2014, Pradikätswein

Vintages #481374 • $39.95 • 750ml. • 91/100
The Abtsberg vineyard of the Maximin Grünhäuser estate lies on a steep, south facing slope on the left bank of the Ruwer River, and it's Devonian blue slate subsoils are typical of the Mosel region. The wine is light yellow, with a complex nose suggesting smoky resin with a hint of kerosene, then lovely apple blossoms and ripe red apple, lime, melon and white peach. The wine is medium sweet, and the palate is honeyed and round, but the vivid acidity enhances the fruit and keeps it full of life, and brings a clean, drying element to the finish. A terrific example of spätlese.

PONTE PELLEGRINO GRECO DI TUFO 2015, IGT Campania

Vintages #477760 • $13.95 • 750ml. • 88/100
This is a fine Greco from Massimo Alois' entry level label Ponte Pellegrino. The wine is medium yellow, with aromas of white flowers, lemon and apple, graced by spicy ginger and dried herbs. The firm acidity is balanced by a suggestion of richness on the palate, and a surprising stony minerality on the finish. A very fine value, with lots of substance for the price.

KIM CRAWFORD SMALL PARCELS SPITFIRE SAUVIGNON BLANC 2016, Marlborough, South Island

Vintages #38240 • $24.95 • 750ml. • 88.5/100
The "small parcel" Spitfire Sauvignon Blanc is from the Growing Horizon vineyard in the Central Wairau region of Marlborough. The wine is pale straw, slightly sweaty on the nose, with notes of hay and cut grass, then aromas of lemon, grapefruit, apple and melon. It is very dry, with bright acidity and a lovely grapefruit-infused palate that evolves into a lengthy tart and mineral finish with a bitter grapefruit pith edge.

JULES TAYLOR SAUVIGNON BLANC 2015, Marlborough, South Island

Vintages #224428 • $19.95 • 750ml. • 88/100
The wine is light straw-yellow in the glass. Pronounced earthy jalapeno and asparagus tones presage aromas of grapefruit, apple, melon and white flowers. Vibrant acidity defines the palate, helping the fruit to jump to the forefront and leaving an earthy-stony undertone on the finish. This is a very good example of what I still think of as mainstream Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, with much more life and urgency than some of the large-brand labels at a similar price.

DOMAINE JACKY MARTEAU SAUVIGNON TOURAINE AC 2015

Vintages #745349 • $14.95 • 750ml. • 88/100
This is a nicely focused Sauvignon Blanc from Touraine. The wine is very pale straw in colour, with slightly sweaty, earthy, cut grass and hay notes underpinning aromas of lemon, grapefruit and green apple. Bright acidity emphasizes the fruit on the palate, causing the earthy-grassy elements to recede, before evolving into a crisp, mineral-tinged finish. Excellent value.

MATETIC CORRALILLO SAUVIGNON BLANC 2015, San Antonio Valley

Vintages #347740 • $15.95 • 750ml. • 88/100
This Sauvignon Blanc is from Chile's San Antonio Valley, a cooler region influenced by the Pacific Ocean. The wine is light straw-yellow, with light earthy and grassy notes surrounding lively green apple, lemon and grapefruit. The wine is bone dry, with brisk acidity and balanced alcohol — fresh on the palate, with the grass and herbs receding beneath the fruit, and a pleasant grapefruit tang that takes on a saline and mineral character on the finish. Competently made, and a fine value.
