This second set of recommendations from the June 24th Vintages release focuses exclusively on white wines. There is no theme here except interest and excellence. I invite you to go directly to the reviews below.

Vintages #492603 • $23.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 90/100
This Greco di Tufo is medium-depth yellow, with highlights of gold. The nose is slightly volatile, with minty-herbal notes, and fruit aromas suggesting lemon and green apple, and hints of riper peach and apricot. The palate shows some breadth, with pleasant, understated fruit, bright acidity, and a stony-mineral underpinning that surfaces on the finish.

Vintages #492918 • $19.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 89/100
This is the result of a collaboration between winemaker Gerhard Kracher and sommelier Aldo Sohm. The wine undergoes spontaneous fermentation in stainless steel, and remains on lees for one year before bottling. It is a lighter straw-yellow colour, with notes of lemon, honeydew melon, and red apple, suggestions of white flowers and an underlying earthiness. The palate has a subtle generosity balanced by crisp acidity, pleasant citrus-apple fruit, and that hint of earthiness underpins the firm, stony finish. An excellent value.

Vintages #142778 • $34.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 90/100
This is a very good premier cru Chablis. It is lighter yellow in colour, with a stony, mineral, lemony-citrus and green apple nose, and a note of white flowers. The wine is bone-dry, crisp, balanced and linear, with citrus-apple flavours washing over a stony base, and continuing into a drying and saline finish. Very good, not succumbing to the generosity of the 2015 vintage.

D'ARENBERG THE LUCKY LIZARD CHARDONNAY 2015, Adelaide Hills, South Australia

Vintages #683011 • $24.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 89/100
This is a pleasant, crisp Chardonnay that reflects its cooler climate origins and carries no new oak. The wine is pale straw in colour, lightly floral on the nose, with notes of lemon, green apple, pear and honeydew melon. It is dry, with fresh acidity, a mid-weight palate, and a light creamy texture. The palate shows subtle but lively fruit and a slight leesy character, while the finish displays zingy acids and stony salinity.

Vintages #382879 • $19.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 88.5/100
This is a dynamic unoaked Montagny. It is pale straw-yellow, with a stony, leesy nose that hints at fresh lemon and green apple. It is dry and crisp, with a lightly creamy texture. The lemon-apple fruit firms on the palate, and lingers on the tart and stony finish. A very good basic unoaked Burgundy at an excellent price.

Vintages #246579 • $16.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 89/100
The Cave Spring Chardonnay Musqué, an aromatic clone of Chardonnay, is from a single block of the estate vineyard. The wine is medium straw-yellow, lightly floral on the nose with suggestions of peach blossoms, then white peach, lemon, and perfumed red apples. The palate is dry and crisp, the fruit is bright and cleanly etched, with a lingering lemon, peach and wet-stone finish. A nice alternative for those looking for an unoaked Chardonnay.

Vintages #482216 • $26.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 89.5/100
This is an intriguing Sauvignon Blanc from Tasmania, much closer to the Loire in ethos than to New Zealand, save for a richer texture and higher alcohol. It is watery white with glints of straw. The nose is rich and smoky, with pleasant vegetal and green herb undertones, and lemon-lime and green apple fruit. The wine is dry, with firm acidity, and slightly elevated alcohol that suggests richness rather than heat. The palate is brighter and fresher than the nose suggests, with more dominant lemon and green apple as the vegetal element dissipates. Refined, classy, with the richness of the new world and the sentiment of the old. Worth discovering for sure.

MAHI SAUVIGNON BLANC 2015, Marlborough, South Island

Vintages #63941 • $23.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 89.5/100
The wine is a lighter straw colour, with rather subtle aromatics suggesting green herbs, grapefruit and green apples. On the palate the fruit jumps to the fore, driven by the bright acidity, and showing more complexity and verve, with focused, vibrant grapefruit and a stony minerality on the drying finish. This Sauvignon Blanc is supplemented by a small (unspecified) amount of Semillon, with a 10% portion fermented in older oak, and a similar portion fermented with wild yeasts. This is a compelling, understated Marlborough Sauvignon that is moving away from the successful Marlborough stereotype.

Vintages #489963 • $14.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 88/100
The wine is bright straw in colour with yellow highlights. The nose has a rather intense, grassy and herbal attack, slightly smoky, with bright grapefruit, green apple and melon fruit complemented by hints of white peach. The wine is dry, with lively acidity and lots of freshness on the palate. The grassy notes recede a little, the grapefruit pops to the fore, and on the finish takes on a stony firmness. A very pleasing value.

TIEFENBRUNNER PINOT GRIGIO 2015, IGT Vigneti delle Dolomiti

Vintages #474742 • $19.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 89/100
This Pinot Grigio from Trentino-Alto Adige is a paler straw-yellow. The nose is lightly floral, with lemon, red apple and melon fruit. Dry, with bright acidity and a medium body, there is a delicately textured creaminess on the mid-palate, and a hint of bitterness on the finish. This wine starts to show some of the breadth and complexity that good Pinot Grigio can command.

LOOSEN BROS. DR. L RIESLING 2015, Qualitätswein

Vintages #599274 • $13.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 88/100
This is an attractive introduction to Mosel Riesling. The wine is pale straw, with glints of yellow. Subtle stony, mineral notes introduce lemon-lime and red apple aromas. It is medium-dry, with bright acidity balancing significant residual sugar, that imparts a rich, honeyed backdrop for the pleasant fruit on the palate. The acidity helps dry the fresh, clean finish. A very fine value!

CAVE SPRING ESTATE BOTTLED GEWÜRZTRAMINER 2013, Cave Spring Vineyard, VQA Beamsville Bench, Niagara Escarpment

Vintages #302059 • $17.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 89/100
This Gewürztraminer is grown in the Cave Spring Vineyard on the Beamsville Bench. It is medium yellow, showing old gold, and has viscous tears. The nose is intense: highly floral — peach blossoms and rose petals — with a hint of soapiness, then complex fruit notes suggesting tangerines, lemons, peaches and ripe red apples. The wine is off-dry, with balancing acidity, and a medium-weight body. Add flavours of apricots and apricot pit to the complex fruit on the palate, and despite the richness there is a welling minerality that emerges on mid-palate and finish. Complex and compelling, and a fine value indeed.

DEU LA DEU ALVARINHO 2016, Monção e Melgaço, DOC Vinho Verde

Vintages #40642 • $20.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 89/100
This Alvarinho is a lighter straw-yellow in colour, with light, peach-blossom florality, and notes suggesting lemon juice, yellow melon and peach fruit. It is dry, with bright acidity, medium alcohol with some creamy richness, expressive fruit and a drying, mineral-tinged finish. Very good, very enjoyable.

BONTERRA VIOGNIER 2015, Mendocino County/Lake County

Vintages #128900 • $21.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 88.5/100
This is a rich, ripe Viognier from Mendocino County. It is medium straw-yellow, with full-blown Viognier aromatics: spicy, with suggestions of peach blossom, orange zest, ripe peaches, Meyer lemon, and almonds. The wine is dryish, with noticeable residual sugar, alcohol is elevated, giving the palate a richness rather than heat, and there is enough acidity to generate a lively freshness. Overall quite a good Viognier, with some complexity and texture.
