available in Ontario from July 8, 2017
In addition to the excellent non-vintage rosé Champagne from Pierre Paillard, the eight white table wines presented here are the non-Chardonnays that I’ve recommended from the July 8th Vintages release.
The table wines include two German Rieslings from the Mosel, a Grenache Blanc blend from the Costières de Nîmes, a very interesting Assyrtiko blend from Santorini, a Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, an Albariño from Rias Baixas, a Pinot Gris from Oregon and a Chenin Blanc from South Africa.
PIERRE PAILLARD BOUZY GRAND CRU BRUT ROSÉ CHAMPAGNE AC
Vintages #482836 • $64.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 92/100The wine is medium salmon in colour. The nose is rich, slightly yeasty and toasty, with a lightly oxidative note underlying the ripe strawberry, raspberry and lemon fruit. Dry, with bright acidity and a medium body, there is a creamy character that emphasizes the ripe fruit on the palate, but nicely balanced by an increasing freshness towards the finish. Very good right now, but this will also cellar well for a few more years. Overall fine value for a Grand Cru growers Champagne.

DR. HERMANN ERDENER TREPPCHEN RIESLING SPÄTLESE 2010, Prädikatswein
Vintages #181917 • $20.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 92/100This Spätlese is golden-yellow, showing some evolution and maturity. The nose is rich and honeyed, with suggestions of peaches, red apples, and apricots, with undertones of rubber, resin and sponge toffee. The wine is medium sweet, but that sweetness and richness is balanced by vivid acidity. The fruit on the palate shows more dried fruit character, despite some ongoing freshness, and the rubber-resinous character lingers into the finish. A wonderful value for those who enjoy, or who want to experience, some aging on a fine Riesling.

DR. PAULY BERGWEILER RIESLING FEINHERB 2016, Qualitätswein
Vintages #496554 • $17.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 88/100This pleasant off-dry Riesling is pale straw in colour. Aromas of apple blossoms, red apples, lemon, melon and white peach are backed by a stony-mineral undertone. Bright acidity balances the sweetness, keeping the palate fresh and crisp, and enhancing the stony, drying finish.

MICHEL GASSIER NOSTRE PAÏS WHITE 2014, AC Costières de Nîmes
Vintages #485664 • $22.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 89/100Costières de Nîmes has moved from under the umbrella of Languedoc to that of the Rhône — not just because of its geographical situation on the western side of the Rhône River south of Nîmes, but because the character and composition of the wines reflect that of the Southern Rhône. This white wine is an excellent example, as a blend of Grenache Blanc with Roussanne, and smaller amounts of Clairette, Viognier and Bourboulenc. It is medium-depth straw in colour, with a subtle nose suggesting white flowers and peach blossoms, gently spicy, with lemon, ripe yellow apple and peach fruit. It is dry, balanced, a little more than medium-bodied, with firm acidity that brings the fruit and floral elements to life, and just a hint of spice that suggests some older, unobtrusive wood influence. Warm, ripe with surprising freshness.

DOMAINE SIGALAS ASSYRTIKO-ATHIRI 2015, AP Santorini
Vintages #74781 • $21.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 89/100In this blend, Assyrtiko is softened with 25% Athiri, that slightly lowers acidity and adds a fruity component. The wine is medium straw with glints of yellow. The nose is almost neutral: stony, lemony, with notes of melon and pear. The wine is dry, with bright acidity, a slim, firm palate, and a lengthy, stony-saline finish. While slightly more generous that pure Assyrtiko, it still has the direct cut and focus of the grape.

WITHER HILLS SAUVIGNON BLANC 2015, Marlborough, South Island
Vintages #919514 • $19.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 88.5/100Paler straw in colour, the nose is led by a lightly herbaceous and grassy tone, backed by a hint of smoke, and then lemon, green apple and honeydew fruit. The wine is dry, with bright acidity that drives the palate. The herbaceous elements recede, remaining as a dusty undertone that nestles under the citrus-lemon and green apple fruit. Crisp, clean and full of life.

FOLLAS NOVAS ALBARIÑO 2015, DO Rias Baixas
Vintages #488981 • $19.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 88.5/100This is a slim and focused Albariño. It is straw-yellow in colour, with subtle but complex aromatics suggesting peach blossoms and white peach, then lemon, red apple and honeydew melon. The wine is dry, with bright acidity that contrasts with a pleasant honeyed breadth on the palate, and then provides the focus for the citrus-mineral finish.

ACROBAT PINOT GRIS 2015, Oregon
Vintages #420729 • $20.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 88/100A very drinkable Pinot Gris from Oregon, this shows some west coast ripeness without losing its brightness and life. The wine is pale straw in colour, with a hint of green herbs backing aromas of lemon and green apple, and riper melon and pineapple. It is just off-dry, giving the fruit on the palate a little more roundness, but the crisp acidity firms the palate and dries the finish very nicely.

MULDERBOSCH CHENIN BLANC 2016, WO Western Cape
Vintages #675421 • $14.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 87.5/100This is a value-laden Chenin Blanc from South Africa. It is pale straw with glints of yellow-gold. An initial reductive SO2 note, likely from the screwcap closure, blew off quickly, revealing lemon, yellow apple and melon fruit, and a hint of white flowers. The wine is dry, with a honeyed richness that is nicely balanced by crisp and bright acidity. A lemony-stony essence lingers on the finish.
