Eight red wines

"... Merlot, Grenache, Tempranillo, Tinta Roriz, Barbera and Pinot Noir ..."

available in Ontario from August 5, 2017

This is the first of three reports on recommended wines from the August 5, 2017 Vintages release. Here we present another fairly eclectic group of reds, headed by two bigger wines: a Merlot blend from the Okanagan and a Grenache from Priorat. These are followed by an older Rioja Reserva, two lighter reds from Dão in Portugal and Barbera d’Asti, and then three rather different Pinot Noirs from Willamette, Santenay and Mercurey.

OSOYOOS LAROSE PÉTALES D'OSOYOOS RED 2013, BC VQA Okanagan Valley

Vintages #276741 • $28.95 • 750ml. • 89/100
Pétales d'Osoyoos is the second wine of BC winemaker Osoyoos Larose. It is 82% Merlot, with 14% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Malbec, and small amounts of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. Deep ruby-red in colour, subtle aromas of plum, blackberry and black currant fruit are backed by a twiggy, earthy depth. Dry, with firm acidity and balanced alcohol, the palate is shaped by rich, ripe tannins that give substantial weight. Oak is a minor presence, adding breadth rather than flavour (no new oak is used), and the finish is stony, drying and salty. This big, bold red still has some varietal character, and represents the southern Okanagan very well.

ROTLLAN TORRA PRIORAT RESERVA 2011, DOQ Priorat

Vintages #511048 • $24.95 • 750ml. • 90/100
This wine shows the extracted side of Grenache, but does so with some finesse and balance. The wine is deep purple in colour, with dense, very ripe (and perhaps slightly jammy) plum, blueberry and blackberry fruit on the nose. The elevated alcohol, robust tannins and extracted fruit yield a full body, fairly well balanced by firm acidity. Similarly a cassis liqueur element in the fruit contrasts with some remaining juicy freshness. In sum, the bold structure over-arches the significant extraction, and the wine maintains its difficult balancing act. Very good indeed, and a fine introduction to Priorat.

FINCA DEL MARQUESADO RESERVA 2009, DOCa Rioja

Vintages #492652 • $17.95 • 750ml. • 88.5/100
This is an opportunity to try an older wine from 2009. Older, but not necessarily traditional, for unlike those medium-depth, translucent, garnet-hued reservas that used to be typical, this wine is inky, almost black, showing red on a very narrow rim, indicating significant extraction. On the nose, an oaky resin frame suggests some American wood, with cedary and dill notes framing very ripe cherry, berry and plum fruit. The wine is dry, with firm acidity and balanced alcohol, and fine, persistent tannins. The fruit on the palate is showing some drying and evolution, edged by savoury black olive and balsamic notes. Certainly interesting, and worth trying at this price.

MONDECO RED 2011, DOC Dão

Vintages #442210 • $13.95 • 750ml. • 88/100
This is a very interesting blend of native Portuguese grapes, based on Tinta Roriz, with Touriga Nacional, Alfrocheiro, Jaen (Mencia) and Baga. The wine shows very little evolution despite its age, with bright acidity keeping the ripe black cherry, blackberry and plum fruit quite fresh, perhaps aided by the fact that only 10% of the wine was aged in oak, with the balance in stainless steel. Tannins are fine and soft, alcohol is balanced, and the finish is lengthy. All-in-all, a very enjoyable, quaffable wine, and a terrific value.

MICHELE CHIARLO PALÁS BARBERA D'ASTI DOCG 2015

Vintages #496471 • $13.95 • 750ml. • 88/100
This is a terrific little Barbera. It is deep purple showing violet on the rim, with a lively nose of ripe blueberries, blackberries and violets. It is dry, with zesty acidity, light tannins, and plenty of juicy fruit on the palate. Such a pleasant bistro/pizza wine — a very good thing in my books — and a tremendous value.

JOVINO PINOT NOIR 2014, Willamette Valley

Vintages #514802 • $22.95 • 750ml. • 89/100
This is a pleasant, dark-fruited Oregon Pinot. Medium-depth red in colour, the nose suggests ripe blackberry and black cherry fruit, with a lightly candied nuance. There isn't much earthy-savoury depth on the palate, but the fresh, tart fruit is very attractive, the tannins are firm and fine, and the finish is crisp and stony. Quite charming and very well-priced.

DOMAINE GUY DUFOULEUR SANTENAY VILLAGE AC 2014

Vintages #487439 • $31.95 • 750ml. • 89/100
This is a light, juicy Santenay, driven by bright acidity, with drying fine-grained tannins and very modest alcohol. The lightly earthy and herbal nose shows plentiful cranberry, raspberry and cherry fruit, which becomes the dominant element on the palate. A zesty-citrus note emerges just as the crisp, stony finish kicks in. A pleasant, rather modern Santenay.

DOMAINE ADÉLIE CHAMPS MARTIN MERCUREY 1ER CRU AC 2014

Vintages #487421 • $42.95 • 750ml. • 88/100
This is a Burgundy for traditionalists. The nose is restrained, more about the earthy, twiggy and herbal elements, with just a hint of red berry and cherry fruit, and a light note of resin. But the wine unfolds as fine chalky tannins frame the palate, that jumps with life as the refreshing acidity brightens the fruit. It's still not finely etched and detailed, but the structure carries the day.
