Spain — Rioja • $17.95 • 88.5/100

This is an opportunity to try an older wine from 2009. Older, but not necessarily traditional, for unlike those medium-depth, translucent, garnet-hued reservas that used to be typical, this wine is inky, almost black, showing red on a very narrow rim, indicating significant extraction. On the nose, an oaky resin frame suggests some American wood, with cedary and dill notes framing very ripe cherry, berry and plum fruit. The wine is dry, with firm acidity and balanced alcohol, and fine, persistent tannins. The fruit on the palate is showing some drying and evolution, edged by savoury black olive and balsamic notes. Certainly interesting, and worth trying at this price. • Tasted 2017-08-05 • LCBO id#492652 • Find it at your nearest LCBOWINE GURU SELECTION INC (Agent)
