Eight reds and four rosés

"... as the summer rosé programme winds down, here are four more rosé selections to complement eight red wines ..."

available in Ontario from August 19, 2017

With the last Vintages release for August, their very welcome summer rosé programme is winding down, and so I’ve selected four more to add to my list of recommendations. While I expect there will be a few more rosés scattered over the following months, catering to Thanksgiving and Christmas turkey pairings, why not stock up now while the choice is still quite good, at least at most of the larger stores?

My four selections include two from the Côtes De Provence, one from Fronton, and a very nicely valued wine from Rioja.

  • 2016 Hecht & Bannier Côtes De Provence Rosé AP
  • 2016 Château De La Clapière Cru Classé Rosé, AP Côtes de Provence
  • 2016 Château Bellevue La Forêt Rosé, AP Fronton
  • 2016 Hacienda Lopez De Haro Rosado, DOCa Rioja

To avoid disappointment when shopping, you can check the location of each wine by hitting the link “Find it at your nearest LCBO” at the end of every review. But you might also find it convenient to look for all our recommendations that are in stock at a particular store.  Just go to the top right-hand corner of the page, type your location in the location box, and click “FIND”. Select one of the five store icons showing on the map — the number on the icon shows the number of recommendations. Peruse the list, and note that you can also screen by price and type — rosé is in the “other” category, along with fortified wine, icewine, and sparkling wine.

I also present eight red wines. The first four are Pinot Noirs: two from Burgundy, one from Marlborough, and one from South Africa. Then there are two Spanish wines — a Grenache blend and a Tempranillo — a Merlot blend from Niagara, and a Touriga Nacional blend from the Douro. All will certainly work in what remains of the summer, but will hold their own throughout the year.

HECHT & BANNIER CÔTES DE PROVENCE ROSÉ AC 2016

Vintages #410035 • $19.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 88.5/100
This is another dry, firm, pleasantly crisp, and lightly tannic rosé from the Côtes de Provence. Nuanced aromas of strawberry, red apple, and apple blossoms are edged by a hint of green herbs. The fruit repeats on the palate, and lingers on the finish with a light tannic burr. Quite typical in style, and a good value.

CHÂTEAU DE LA CLAPIÈRE CRU CLASSÉ ROSÉ 2016, AP Côtes de Provence

Vintages #491035 • $21.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 88/100
A very pleasant Côtes de Provence rosé. Pale salmon-coloured, with pretty cherry, strawberry, red apple and apple blossom aromas, and a citrus edge. Dryish, with bright acidity but a generosity that suggests a whisper of hidden sugar, the fruit is lively and fresh, with a firm, lemony and savoury underpinning, and a crisp, drying finish. Nicely balanced.

CHÂTEAU BELLEVUE LA FORÊT ROSÉ 2016, AP Fronton

Vintages #219840 • $14.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 88/100
This fine little rosé from Fronton, north of Toulouse, is a blend of 65% Négrette, 20% Gamay and 15% Syrah. It is medium-depth salmon with glints of copper. Dry, firm, with a light apple skin tannic texture, the wine is surprisingly focused, with pleasant strawberry and cherry fruit, a hint of savoury herbs, and a light apple blossom nuance. An excellent value indeed.

HACIENDA LOPEZ DE HARO ROSADO 2016, DOCa Rioja

Vintages #450775 • $12.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 88/100
This is a subtle but firmly structured Rioja rosé made from Garnacha and Viura. Pale salmon in colour, the nose shows subtle apple blossoms, red apples and strawberries, with a hint of savoury herbs. Fully dry, acidity is crisp, and a suggestion of apple-skin tannins linger, with the pleasant citrus and berry fruit, on the firm finish. Really an exceptional value.

DOMAINE MALDANT PAUVELOT SAVIGNY-LÈS-BEAUNE AC 2014

Vintages #487413 • $36.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 91/100
This is a light, lively and bright Savigny-Lès-Beaune, full of life. Vivid acidity etches the cherry, strawberry and raspberry fruit on the palate, with fine, firm tannins, and a crisp finish that hints at orange zest over the lingering berry fruit. The wine speaks to the cool and vibrant 2014 vintage, but also to a style of winemaking that focuses on acidity, and allows the wine to express itself without dumbing it down with excessive oak. Quite lovely.

CHÂTEAU DE CHAMIREY MERCUREY AC 2014

Vintages #499624 • $39.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 89/100
This is a fine village-level Mercurey. Bright acidity shapes the palate, bringing life to the cherry, raspberry and blackberry fruit, and balancing fine tannins. The nose is subtle, with floral, mushroom and earthy tones complementing the ripe fruit. The finish is lengthy and drying, coalescing into a pleasant blackberry essence.

SPY VALLEY PINOT NOIR 2013, Marlborough, South Island

Vintages #734681 • $24.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 88/100
The wine is translucent but darker red in colour, with bright aromas of blackberry, black cherry fruit, a little volatility, and a light, earthy undertone. Fine tannins and bright acidity define the palate, where the fruit is pleasantly juicy, and has just enough earthy, twiggy depth to stamp its Pinot character.

ELGIN VINTNERS PINOT NOIR 2013, WO Elgin

Vintages #512442 • $19.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 88/100
This is intriguing: while the wine is a little too rich and alcoholic for true Pinot character, its firm acidity and fine tannins keep the structure from veering too far off track. The pleasantly ripe and juicy cherry and berry fruit is backed by a hint of earth and leather that speaks to South Africa. All in all, a very good value.

PALACIOS REMONDO LA MONTESA CRIANZA 2014, DOCa Rioja

Vintages #674572 • $24.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 90/100
This is a bright and modern Grenache-based Rioja, with just 12% Tempranillo, from the renowned Alvaro Palacios. Clean vanilla and oak spice (100% French oak), support complex and finely-etched cherry, strawberry, raspberry and blackberry fruit. Crisp acidity and fine but grippy tannins counterbalance slightly warm alcohol. Fruit on the palate is ripe without being jammy, and a light earthy and savoury element appears. Very appealing.

ALEJANDRO FERNÁNDEZ DEHESA LA GRANJA 2008, Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y León

Vintages #192476 • $20.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 89/100
In some ways this seems like old school Tempranillo, with its cloak of American oak still showing resin, coconut and dill. But the colour is deep, dense red and the rim is very narrow, suggesting extended extraction that seems modern (if not always welcome), with surprisingly little fading from the nine years in barrel and bottle. Fruit is very ripe indeed, moving into the stewed and drying spectrum. Acidity is still very firm, alcohol is slightly elevated, and tannins are fine but mouthcoating. This will be a treat for those who love rich, bold wines.

FIELDING RED CONCEPTION 2015, VQA Niagara Peninsula

Vintages #189183 • $19.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 88/100
Red Conception is a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Syrah. Subtle cherry, blueberry, blackberry and black currant aromas fill the nose, with a lightly earthy and twiggy underpinning. It is dry, with bright acidity, firm but fine tannins, and a juicy sweetness that is supported by a savoury, herbal edge. The impact of wood is well integrated, and the finish lingers with pleasant tannins and fruit. Nicely done!

SAGRADO TINTO 2013, DOC Douro

Vintages #380907 • $14.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 88/100
This is a blend of Touriga Nacional and other local varieties from the Douro. It is rather deep purple in colour, with appealing ripe cherry, blackberry and plum fruit on the nose. Add a twiggy, earthy underpinning to the palate, where oak is moderate and integrated, and bright acidity balances grippy tannins, and you have a big, bold, attractive wine. A very fine value too.
