Vive la différence: off the beaten path with ten intriguing whites

"... ten wines from nine different varieties or blends — so much interest and diversity ..."

available in Ontario from August 19, 2017

Here we have ten wines from nine different varieties or blends. The two that overlap are Chenin Blancs, but the styles are very different indeed. So, as usual, I enjoy the diversity and interest these wines provide. But they are fine values as well: seven are under $20, and the remaining three are very good wines that more than justify their slightly higher prices. Vive la différence!

TENUTA ROVEGLIA VIGNE DI CATULLO LUGANA RISERVA DOC 2013

Vintages #437004 • $24.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 91/100
This is a very compelling wine from Lugana in Lombardy, made from Trebbiano di Lugana (Verdicchio). It is bright yellow in colour, with glints of old gold. A lactic, slightly leesy depth frames the nose, with white flowers, lemon, apple and melon fruit. The wine is dry, with a pleasantly creamy texture and weight, but balanced by firm acidity. Delicious fruit with a savoury-herbal edge lingers on the drying finish, stiffened by a whisper of phenolic bitterness. An interesting, complex wine.

RAATS ORIGINAL CHENIN BLANC 2016, WO Stellenbosch

Vintages #651497 • $21.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 91/100
This is an unoaked Chenin Blanc: lightly flinty on the attack, then bright honeydew, green apple and lemon fruit. Crisp, firm and dry, there's a leesy essence that supports the fruit, while the acidity invigorates the palate with a steely tension, and generates a stony, saline finish. Precise, lean and focused, and quite unique for South Africa. A very lovely wine and a great value.

GOSS CREEK CHENIN BLANC 2015, California

Vintages #512715 • $15.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 88/100
It's nice to see something fresh and crisp from California. A paler straw in colour, the nose presents lemon, yellow apple and tropical fruit cup, with a tinge of Chenin honey. The wine is dry, with crisp acidity (probably not acidified) modest alcohol, with lots of life. That fruit cup flavour persists, and while there isn't much Chenin character, there is a little honeyed firmness towards the finish. Quite a nice value, and very drinkable.

JOIEFARM A NOBLE BLEND 2016, BC VQA Okanagan Valley

Vintages #454793 • $25.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 89/100
This is a blend of Gewürztraminer and Riesling, complemented by Auxerrois, Pinot Blanc and Muscat, modeled on Alsatian Edelzwicker. The enticing nose suggests orange blossoms and roses, with notes of apricot, pear and lemon-grapefruit underneath. On the palate the apricot essence wells to the fore. While a whisper of residual sugar adds a roundness, crisp acidity keeps the wine bright and clean through to the finish. Delicate and elegant — and quite lovely.

LES NEIGES DE L'AGLY VERMENTINO - VIOGNER 2013, IGP Côtes Catalanes

Vintages #512566 • $19.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 89/100
Fresh lemon, honeydew melon and white peach on the nose, with a hint of celery stalk and a suggestion of oaky resin. The palate is dry, with crisp acidity balanced by a light creamy texture. The fruit is bright and crisp, the resin notes build a little, but still remain balanced, and the finish is crisp and drying. This seems to be part of a growing trend to harvest white grapes earlier in the south of France, and the wines certainly benefit. 55% Vermentino and 45% Viognier. Well worth exploring.

D'ARENBERG THE HERMIT CRAB VIOGNIER - MARSANNE 2016, McLaren Vale, South Australia

Vintages #662775 • $17.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 88/100
Given the aromatic grape varieties — 72% Viognier and 28% Marsanne — the wine is a little shy on the nose, presenting an earthy, stony essence with a light lemony-peachy note. But the palate kicks in, with bright acidity underlying a pleasantly nuanced mélange of peach, melon, lemon, apple and tropical fruit salad, quite lively and juicy, with a firm, lingering finish. The Viognier is constrained, well-defined, and the acidity keeps this lively and direct. A fine value.

TERRE STREGATE SVELATO FALANGHINA DEL SANNIO DOP 2015

Vintages #486076 • $16.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 89/100
Bright pale straw in colour, lightly floral, with lemon, apple and melon aromas and a dusting of green herbs. The pleasant lemon and grapefruit-infused palate takes on a note of white peach, with a backbone of crisp acidity and a firm, slightly creamy weight. The finish is dry and stony. Excellent value.

PACO & LOLA ALBARIÑO 2016, DO Rías Baixas

Vintages #350041 • $19.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 89/100
Interesting Alvarinho: almost neutral on the nose, with hints of stony lemon-citrus and white peach. But the palate is energized, shaped by bright acidity and a firm mid-palate — the fruit comes alive, with lemon and peach notes, and then a drying, wet stone finish. Well worth trying.

PHILIPPE VIALLET LES FLOCONS SAVOIE BLANC AP 2015

Vintages #513416 • $14.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 88/100
An interesting blend of Jacquère, with Chaselas, Chardonnay and Altesse from the region of Savoie. This is a crisp, dry wine, with juicy, lemony, apple fruit, bright acidity, and a firm, stony underpinning that finishes dry and mineral. While rather neutral in character, the wine is full of life and verve. Great value, and a style of wine I appreciate.

DOMAINE SALMON GRANDE RÉSERVE MUSCADET SÈVRE & MAINE SUR LIE AP 2015

Vintages #438309 • $16.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 88/100
This is a slim and stony Muscadet, with a waft of white flowers, a core of lemon, and hints of cheese rind and sea shells. Bone-dry with racy acidity, there is a little generosity here that perhaps reflects the warm 2015 vintage. The finish is crisp, firm and salty. An excellent value.
