available in Ontario from September 2, 2017
This terrific lineup begins with a focused Crémant de Loire based on Chenin Blanc. Two of the four Chardonnays hail from Niagara, with the other two from Burgundy and the Yarra Valley. The final two wines are a fascinating, youthful Hunter Valley Sémillon, and an intriguing Sémillon-Sauvignon Blanc from Niagara.

DE CHANCENY BRUT CRÉMANT DE LOIRE AC
Vintages #515262 • $19.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 89/100This is a fine Crémant de Loire, mostly Chenin Blanc, with small amounts of Chardonnay and Cabernet Franc. The nose presents subtle notes of toast, honey and lemon, but it comes into its own when you take that first sip. The wine is dry and bracing, the tart but juicy lemon and apple fruit are softened by a lightly honeyed character, and the finish is dry, crisp and stony. This has great life — a lovely little sparkler, and all that anyone could ask for, given the price.

2027 WISMER VINEYARD FOX CROFT BLOCK CHARDONNAY 2014, VQA Twenty Mile Bench, Niagara Escarpment
Vintages #421362 • $22.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 90/100The nose is lively, with a firm, lightly smoky-resin note on the attack, that doesn't hide the bright lemon, apple and melon fruit. Dry, with firm acidity, the palate has some generosity — a creamy texture combines with vanilla from the oak — but the fruit still stands out. The finish is crisp, lemony and stony. A very nice and value-laden example of cool climate Niagara Chardonnay. Elegant and tasty.

ANDRÉ DELORME RULLY AC 2014
Vintages #488791 • $28.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 90/100This is a rich, ripe Rully, that still has the cut and verve of the cooler 2014 vintage, making for excellent balance. The medium-depth yellow colour presages the oak, which shows on the nose with light resin and vanilla, framing the core of lemon and yellow apple fruit. The firm acidity drives the palate, leaving the resinous frame behind, enlivening the fruit, and leading into a lemony, stony finish. I love the vitality and balance.

DE BORTOLI GULF STATION CHARDONNAY 2016, Yarra Valley, Victoria
Vintages #238071 • $19.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 89/100The wine is crisp and fresh, with juicy lemon, apple and melon fruit cushioned in a lightly creamy frame. The palate has a depth that suggests older oak, yet the wine's vigor isn't compromised in any way. It has a subtle fruit-sweetness, but enough acidity to keep the palate firm, and the finish tart and drying. Approachable and nicely balanced.

REDSTONE CHARDONNAY 2013, VQA Niagara Peninsula
Vintages #398966 • $19.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 88.5/100The wine is pale straw in colour. Lemon, apple, pear and melon aromas are backed by a hint of barrel spice. It is dry, with the bright acidity animating the pleasant fruit, and the subtle oak presence providing depth and resonance. The finish lingers with zesty lemon minerality. A very creditable effort.

MARGAN FAMILY HUNTER VALLEY SÉMILLON 2016, Hunter Valley, New South Wales
Vintages #493338 • $19.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 90/100This Hunter Valley Sémillon has a little more weight and evolution than I've grown to expect from examples that are this young. Start with the colour, almost medium-depth yellow-green, and while the nose is restrained, there are already hints of walnuts and resin along with the subtle lemon and apple fruit. Again on the palate a toasty resin note accompanies the light lemon and apple fruit. The wine is fully dry, with firm acidity and some weight. Buy several, drink one now to calibrate, and then crack one open every year or two to see how this evolves. It might be very interesting indeed!

CREEKSIDE ICONOCLAST SÉMILLON-SAUVIGNON BLANC 2015, VQA Niagara Peninsula
Vintages #520627 • $22.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 89/100This is a restrained and constrained wine from Creekside, to my mind quite distant from some of their more exuberant and edgy offerings. The nose presents just a hint of lemon and apple fruit in a lightly oaky and resinous frame. Acidity is crisp and balanced, alcohol is moderate, and while the palate has just a little more weight than I was expecting, it is nicely focused. The hints of apple and lemon replay with a light savoury-herbal undertone, and a dry, saline finish. Subtle but engaging. 74% Sémillon and 26% Sauvignon Blanc.
