Here I review seven wines from more aromatic grape varieties: Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Gewurztraminer and Albariño. The first Riesling is a firmly dry example from DAC Wachau in Austria, while the second is a local medium-dry wine from Niagara. Two of the Sauvignon Blancs are from Marlborough, while the third is a very good Loire wine from Menetou-Salon. The final two wines are a Gewurztraminer from Alsace and an Albariño from Rias Baixas.

DOMÄNE WACHAU TERRASSEN FEDERSPIEL RIESLING 2015, DAC Wachau
Vintages #491902 • $21.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 90/100A lovely, refined Austrian Riesling. Very delicate and subtle peach, melon and lemon fruit on the nose replay on the palate with a little more impact and weight. A light herbal component adds complexity. The wine is dry, with firm acidity, and a lingering, stony, saline and citrus finish. Close to austere, but I love the balance and elegance — a compelling, food-friendly Riesling.

FLAT ROCK RIESLING 2015, VQA Twenty Mile Bench, Niagara Escarpment
Vintages #43281 • $17.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 89/100This Riesling is made from estate fruit. Aromas of fresh herbs, peach blossoms, white peaches, red apples and lime juice are underpinned by the beginnings of bottle evolution, with a subtle rubber-kerosene note. The wine is medium-dry with low alcohol, and the very bright acidity brings the palate to life, keeping the fruit flavours crisp and tart as the rubber-kerosene element recedes, and drying the finish that lingers with impressions of peach, lime and wet stones. Overall still juicy, fresh and inviting — a terrific drinkability factor — with the evolution adding some complexity.

VILLA MARIA SOUTHERN CLAYS SINGLE VINEYARD SAUVIGNON BLANC 2016, Marlborough, South Island
Vintages #447474 • $29.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 90/100This is one of Villa Maria's premium single vineyard wines. While the nose shows the herbal, vegetal and slightly sweaty edge that you might expect from mainstream Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, the lemon, green apple and melon fruit still shows through. And on the palate the crisp acidity brightens the fruit and brings it to the fore: it's focused, zingy and full of life, and the finish is drying, tart and stony.

AWATERE RIVER BY LOUIS VAVASOUR SAUVIGNON BLANC 2015, Marlborough, South Island
Vintages #492272 • $21.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 89/100This is a rather typical Marlborough, at least on the nose, with a clear vegetal and green herb essence on the attack, followed by subtle lemon, apple, melon and white peach notes. The wine jumps on the palate, with the vegetal notes receding, the vivid acidity driving the fruit forward, and then a lingering stony, tart finish. Very good indeed.

CHAVET & FILS LA DAME DE JACQUES COEUR MENETOU-SALON BLANC AC 2015
Vintages #525048 • $19.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 89/100This is a fine Sauvignon Blanc from Menetou-Salon, a wine region just to the south-west of Sancerre. The nose is subtle: light earthy, herbal and stony tones are complemented by lemon-lime and green apple fruit. The wine is dry, with firm acidity, lean, focused fruit that over-rides the herbal elements on the palate, and a stony and drying finish. This is a slim, elegant wine — clearly Loire in style, but with a little extra generosity from the 2015 vintage.

ANNE DE LAWEISS COLLECTION GEWURZTRAMINER 2015, AC Alsace
Vintages #141226 • $19.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 89/100A very approachable Gewurztraminer from Alsace. Vibrant (but not over-the-top) aromatics, suggesting peach blossoms, rosewater, perfumed peach, melon and lemon fruit — bright but focused. Certainly off-dry, the acidity keeps the palate fresh and infuses the fruit with a brightness that nicely balances a creamy texture. Generous and charming.

EL CAMINO RECTORAL DO UMIA ALBARIÑO 2015, DO Rías Baixas
Vintages #492629 • $15.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 88/100This is an Albariño from Rias Baixas. The subtle aromas of ripe peach, melon, apple and lemon replay with more vibrancy on the palate, infused by the lively acidity. This is dry, with modest alcohol and a clean, crisp finish. Simple, direct, very drinkable, and a very fine value indeed.
