This is a bright and focused cool climate Syrah. There is certainly lots of extraction, as suggested by the deep, dense ruby-purple colour, and the nose suggests that as well, with densely packed blueberry, blackberry and plum fruit, graced by notes of violets and pepper, and backed by a twiggy undertone. But what defines this wine is the vivid acidity, that enlivens the palate, balances the fine, grippy tannins, and keeps the fruit fresh and lively. Tannins and acidity mingle with an essence of blackberry on the lingering finish. The Syrah is from Queenston Road in Niagara-on-the-Lake, supplemented by a small percentage of Viognier. A Niagara benchmark, in my view. • Tasted 2017-09-02 • LCBO id#471797 • Find it at your nearest LCBOHOBBS & COMPANY (Agent)
