Austria — Wachau • $21.95 • 90/100
This is a terrific introduction to Austrian Riesling. I love to sip this kind of wine on its own, but it is so very food friendly too. In fact in my view, it’s these lovely, dry Rieslings that really work at the table. And if you try it, you’ll see why Germans and Austrians have embraced dry Riesling so dramatically — it’s the rest of the world that hasn’t quite caught up. It is drinking beautifully now, but it certainly has the structure to age in the cellar for another five years, and probably many more than that. My published review follows.
A lovely, refined Austrian Riesling. Very delicate and subtle peach, melon and lemon fruit on the nose replay on the palate with a little more impact and weight. A light herbal component adds complexity. The wine is dry, with firm acidity, and a lingering, stony, saline and citrus finish. Close to austere, but I love the balance and elegance — a compelling, food-friendly Riesling. • Tasted 2017-09-02 • LCBO id#491902 • Find it at your nearest LCBO • NOBLE ESTATES WINES & SPIRITS INC.
