Tasting: two contrasting Sauvignon Blancs

"... one of the great things about Sauvignon Blanc is its chameleon quality ..."

wines available at some Vintages stores in Ontario

One of the great things about Sauvignon Blanc is its chameleon quality: it adapts and presents itself in so many different ways, depending on where and how it is grown, and then how it is vinified. So it’s very instructive for comparative tastings, since it often shows its character and origin quite openly.

Here are two moderately price examples that are worth comparing. The first is from Menetou-Salon in the Loire, with some subtle vegetal and herbaceous notes underlying a lean, stony essence. The second is from Marlborough: the herbal and vegetal elements are wilder and more pungent, the fruit is riper and bigger, yet there is still a mineral element that shows on the finish. So different from each other, and yet deep down there are some common factors that just express themselves in very different ways.

So if you can, open both at the same time, and enjoy the similarities and differences.

CHAVET & FILS LA DAME DE JACQUES COEUR MENETOU-SALON BLANC AC 2015

Vintages #525048 • $19.95 • 750ml. • 89/100
This is a fine Sauvignon Blanc from Menetou-Salon, a wine region just to the south-west of Sancerre. The nose is subtle: light earthy, herbal and stony tones are complemented by lemon-lime and green apple fruit. The wine is dry, with firm acidity, lean, focused fruit that over-rides the herbal elements on the palate, and a stony and drying finish. This is a slim, elegant wine — clearly Loire in style, but with a little extra generosity from the 2015 vintage.

AWATERE RIVER BY LOUIS VAVASOUR SAUVIGNON BLANC 2015, Marlborough, South Island

Vintages #492272 • $21.95 • 750ml. • 89/100
This is a rather typical Marlborough, at least on the nose, with a clear vegetal and green herb essence on the attack, followed by subtle lemon, apple, melon and white peach notes. The wine jumps on the palate, with the vegetal notes receding, the vivid acidity driving the fruit forward, and then a lingering stony, tart finish. Very good indeed.
