Tasting: Auntsfield Single Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc 2016

"... a compact and elegant Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc ..."

New Zealand — Marlborough • $20.95 • 90/100

I’ve often commented on the growing diversity of Sauvignon Blanc from Marlborough. Certainly some of the very best come at premium prices, but there are many wines of interest that we can find in Ontario in the $19 to $25 range. This example from Auntsfield Winery shows lots of Marlborough character, but with some real constraint and refinement. Here is my formal tasting note:

This approachable Sauvignon Blanc is a little more compressed and elegant than you might normally expect from Marlborough. Subtle grapefruit, apple and melon aromas are complemented by a lightly herbal undertone and a stony-earthy edge. It’s dry, brightly acidic, with pleasant fruit and green herbs on the palate, and a grapefruit-tinged finish. Balanced, compact and focused. • Tasted 2017-09-30 • LCBO id#663286 • Find it at your nearest LCBODB WINE & SPIRITS INC. (Agent)
