Four Chardonnays and a Sauvignon Blanc

"... Chardonnays from Stellenbosch, Rully, Chablis and Viré Clessé, and a Sancerre ..."

available in Ontario on October 28, 2017

Headlining these recommendations is the 2015 Chardonnay from the fine Stellenbosch producer Rustenberg, one of my highest rated wines from this release at 92 points. The combination of vivid acidity and nuanced richness reminds me of better wines from the Mâcon, and at just $19.95 it is a raging buy!

The remaining three Chardonnays are from Burgundy. The first of these is an excellent 2015 Rully, Jean Baptiste Ponsot’s 1er Cru Molesme. Another 92 point wine in my view, this may be even riper than the Rustenberg — 2015 was a warm vintage — but again the acidity keeps this wine dynamic and full of life. The second is the 2014 Montmains Chablis 1er Cru from William Fèvre — a fine Chablis from a classic (cooler) vintage. The final Chardonnay is a very approachable Viré-Clessé from the cooperative Cave de Viré, their 2015 Grande Réserve.

The final wine is a very good 2015 Sancerre from Bernard Reverdy & Fils.

RUSTENBERG CHARDONNAY 2015, WO Stellenbosch

Vintages #598631 • $19.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 92/100
Another excellent offering from Rustenberg. A nicely complex but understated resin-vanilla-citrus-apple nose follows a gently smoky attack. Fruit on the palate is generous, backed by a lightly leesy breadth, but vivid acidity shines through, keeping the palate alive and in balance. The finish has a lemony, stony length, with a little resin note lingering as well. Ripe, but full of energy and life. This is an amazing value at $19.95 — most highly recommended.

JEAN BAPTISTE PONSOT MOLESME RULLY 1ER CRU AC 2015

Vintages #513457 • $43.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 92/100
This is a modern, ripe Rully 1er Cru, with subtle resin and oak spice underpinning notes of white flowers, and a core of lemon, pear, yellow apple and peach aromas. Vivid acidity keeps this squarely in Burgundy, balancing the fruit ripeness and allowing the lemony finish to take on a stony, saline edge. Price reflects quality here — very good and totally delicious.

WILLIAM FÈVRE MONTMAINS CHABLIS 1ER CRU AC 2014

Vintages #488718 • $39.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 91/100
2014 is a classic (cooler, later harvest) vintage in Burgundy — the type I generally prefer — and this Chablis has it all. There is almost no fruit on the nose: a stony, seashell and iodine essence, with just an intimation of lemon, lime and green apple underneath. There is a lactic creaminess on the palate that allows the fruit to expand a little, but acids are firm, the wine is bone-dry, and the finish lingers with lemon pith and wet stones. A fine Chablis indeed.

CAVE DE VIRÉ GRANDE RÉSERVE VIRÉ-CLESSÉ AC 2015

Vintages #243782 • $19.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 88/100
This is a bright, lean white Burgundy. Aromas of fresh lemon, green apple and white flowers have a stony edge. Crisp acidity plays against some generosity from slightly riper fruit on the palate, and possibly from older oak. A very pleasant wine meant for early drinkng: simple, direct and very good value.

BERNARD REVERDY & FILS SANCERRE AC 2016

Vintages #200055 • $28.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 89/100
This is an attractive Sancerre, with a firm stony character. The nose is lean, with a hint of spearmint, a core of lemon, pear and apple fruit, and a light stony-earthy edge. It's bone-dry, with crisp lemon-lime acidity, a very subtle herbal-mint undertone, and a chalky, saline finish.
