There is so much enjoyment and drinkability with this set of eight white wines: Pinot Grigio and Soave from Italy, Grüner Veltliner from Austria, Riesling from British Columbia and the Mosel, Gewürztraminer from the Pfalz, Grenache Blanc from Cariñena and Alvarinho from the Minho region of Portugal.
I particularly want to highlight the first three wines that I’ve scored at 90 points. The first, and the only premium-priced wine in the group, is the excellent 2015 Pinot Grigio from Jermann, which will give you some insight into how satisfying good Pinot Grigio can be. The 2016 Soave from Pieropan is a fine example of the region, and if you enjoy fresh and lively whites, you will fall for this for sure. And I can’t get enough of the third wine, the 2014 Grüner Veltliner from the excellent Wachau producer Nikolaihof — such wonderful depth and Grüner character from this entry-level offering.
The final five wines are all of interest and are fine value.

JERMANN PINOT GRIGIO 2015, IGT Venezia Giulia
Vintages #117093 • $34.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 90/100The third repeat of this wine, originally released in November of 2016, is now showing some subtle effects of another year in bottle. It is almost neutral on the nose, with muted lemon, apple and peach fruit, and an herbal and smoky-earthy undernote. The palate has a pleasant breadth, shaped by firm acidity and a pleasant apple skin bitterness, while the fruit focuses into an apple-citrus core on the stony finish. Very classy — less exuberant than my notes from a year ago — but focused and assured.

PIEROPAN SOAVE CLASSICO DOC 2016
Vintages #946848 • $19.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 90/100This is a lively Soave from the excellent producer Pieropan. The wine is brightly floral, with pleasant lemon, red apple, melon and white peach aromas. It is dry, with fresh acidity: the fruit on the palate is crisp, but the wine has a compelling weight and breadth. The finish is drying and tangy — so much life and verve!

NIKOLAIHOF WACHAU TERRASSEN GRÜNER VELTLINER 2014, Wachau Valley
Vintages #85274 • $20.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 90/100This is a captivating Grüner Veltliner — an entry-level offering from the excellent biodynamic producer Nikolaihof. It leans strongly towards the savoury and mineral spectrum, with an earthy, smoky, and lightly vegetal nose that almost hides muted lemon and apple tones. The palate is full of life: the invigorating acidity certainly brings the fruit forward, adding melon and white peach notes, as the savory and vegetal elements gather into the salty, stony finish. Quite brilliant, and an incredible value.

QUAILS' GATE DRY RIESLING 2015, BC VQA Okanagan Valley
Vintages #308312 • $17.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 89/100This Riesling presents itself as rather austere. The nose is muted, with just the beginnings of a Riesling rubber-resin note, and a centre of lemon and apple fruit. The palate has a surprising weight, with firm acidity hiding a small amount of residual sugar, subtle ripe fruit, and a dried-honey breadth. Lovers of dry Riesling need to sample this for sure.

LOOSEN BROS. DR. L RIESLING 2016, Qualitätswein
Vintages #599274 • $14.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 88/100This is a light, pleasant medium-dry Mosel Riesling. The subtle apple and citrus nose replays on the palate, where the refreshing acidity balances considerable residual sugar, keeping the palate light and fresh, and drying the zesty finish. A delicious value indeed.

RUPPERTSBERGER GEWÜRZTRAMINER HOFSTÜCK SPÄTLESE 2016, Prädikatswein
Vintages #320473 • $17.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 89/100This is a complex but quite delicate Gewürztraminer, with lower alcohol and vibrant acidity. It is bright yellow with glints of gold. Aromas of peach blossoms nestle over honeyed apple, peach and pineapple fruit, with a dash of ginger and spice. The wine is medium-dry, but bright acidity balances the residual sugar, that gives the palate a lightly creamy richness and supports the ripe and slightly candied fruit. A very good value indeed, and quite delicious.

CORONA DE ARAGÓN GARNACHA BLANCA 2016, DOP Cariñena
Vintages #527085 • $17.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 89/100This is a modern, crisp and lively Garnacha Blanca from Cariñena in northeastern Spain. The nose is lightly floral, with nuanced lemon, apple, peach and apricot fruit, over a nutty, almond-tinged undertone. Acids build on the palate, alcohol is modest, and yet the fruit has a subtle ripeness without losing its freshness. A delicate apricot note lingers with a nutty bitterness on the finish. Very good, and a very good value too.

NORTICO ALVARINHO 2016, Vinho Regional Minho
Vintages #471300 • $13.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 87.5/100This is a simple, fresh Alvarinho: lightly floral, with subtle lemon, apple and white peach aromas. It is dry, with crisp acidity that enlivens the juicy fruit on the palate. The finish lingers with tart acidity and a peachy, floral essence. Good value, and a great partner with light seafood and shellfish.
