Spain — Cariñena • $17.95 • WD Score 89/100
Garnacha Blanca is fairly widely planted in northeastern Spain, which is believed to be its place of origin. Under its French name Grenache Blanc, it is also an important white grape (usually blended) in Roussillon and the Southern Rhône. With the benefit of modern vineyard management, earlier picking, and less oxidative winemaking techniques, wines made from the grape can have lower alcohol and higher acidity than tradition would say, while maintaining freshness and more fruit-forward aromas and flavours. Recently we’ve seen several attractive examples from southern France, and this is a very appealing offering from Cariñena in Spain. My formal tasting note follows.
This is a modern, crisp and lively Garnacha Blanca from Cariñena in northeastern Spain. The nose is lightly floral, with nuanced lemon, apple, peach and apricot fruit, over a nutty, almond-tinged undertone. Acids build on the palate, alcohol is modest, and yet the fruit has a subtle ripeness without losing its freshness. A delicate apricot note lingers with a nutty bitterness on the finish. Very good, and a very good value too. • Tasted 2017-10-28 • LCBO id#527085 • Find it at your nearest LCBO • NOBLE ESTATES WINES & SPIRITS INC. (Agent)
