Ten red wines from Canada, France, Italy and New Zealand

"... red wines from Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir, Grenache, Syrah, Gamay and Sangiovese ..."

available in Ontario from November 25, 2017

Let’s begin with two wines from Niagara, made from two of the signature red varieties of the region. The first is from Tawse, their 2013 Laundry Vineyard Cabernet Franc, that I think represents both the character of the variety and its regional expression. The second is a very good rendition of Niagara Pinot Noir, the 2014 Domaine Queylus Tradition Pinot Noir.

Of five wines from France, three are from the Rhône: an excellent introduction to northern Rhône Syrah, the 2015 Cave de Tain Grand Classique Crozes-Hermitage, and two wines from southern Rhône winemaker Stéphane Vedeau, his 2015 La Ferme du Mont Le Ponnant Côtes du Rhône Villages and his 2015 La Ferme du Mont Première Côte, Côtes du Rhône.  These are followed by a good regional Burgundy, the 2015 Joseph Drouhin Bourgogne Pinot Noir, and a juicy and attractive Beaujolais, the 2014 Domaine de Nugues Beaujolais Villages.

Two Chianti Classicos include an elegant riserva-style wine, the 2013 Castello di Gabbiano Riserva Chianti Classico, along with the attractive 2015 San Felice Chianti Classico. The final wine is a second new world Pinot Noir, this from Marlborough, New Zealand: the 2015 Cloudy Bay Pinot Noir.

TAWSE LAUNDRY VINEYARD CABERNET FRANC 2013, VQA Lincoln Lakeshore, Niagara Peninsula

Vintages #130997 • $26.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 90/100
This is a spot-on Niagara Cabernet Franc from a cooler vintage, showing exactly what it is, and not trying to hide its origin and character. So what is it? Well, Cabernet Franc almost inevitably shows an element of "green" vegetal or herbal character, unless that varietal character is ripened out of it, or the winemaker has temporarily hidden its character by aggressive oak spice. This wine shows a light green herbal streak and a cedary undertone, entwined with a core of black cherry and blackberry fruit that has a subtle plummy depth. Tannins are fine but firm, alcohol is balanced, and acidity is crisp. There's significant oak treatment, but it fits and complements rather than hides the wine's character. I find this very attractive now, and I would drink most of this in the shorter term. But I would also enjoy keeping some bottles to see what happens to the wine as it evolves in the cellar. Lots of respect here.

DOMAINE QUEYLUS TRADITION PINOT NOIR 2014, VQA Niagara Peninsula

Vintages #392738 • $29.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 89/100
A pleasant expression of Niagara Pinot Noir. Subtle oak spice aromas edge pretty cherry, raspberry and blackberry fruit, with a hint of earth and mushrooms underneath. The wine is nicely structured, with firm acidity and fine, resolving tannins. The chalky texture holds pleasant fruit, still quite fresh but with the beginnings of a drying element, as the light, tart acids brighten the palate and linger with the tannins on the finish.

CAVE DE TAIN GRAND CLASSIQUE CROZES-HERMITAGE AC 2015

Vintages #572230 • $23.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 90/100
To Syrah with love! A youthful deep purple-red colour foretells the purple fruit on the nose — blueberries, blackberries and black currants, with a smoky, peppery and lightly toasted edge. Bright acids, just-medium alcohol and fine tannins embrace the juicy, ripe fruit, nicely counterbalancing an earthy, savoury and slightly meaty typicity. The tannins linger and enhance the stony, salty finish. A very compelling and value-laden introduction to northern Rhône Syrah.

LA FERME DU MONT LE PONNANT CÔTES DU RHÔNE VILLAGES AP 2015

Vintages #171371 • $19.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 90/100
This is a rich, ripe villages-level wine, a blend of Grenache and Syrah. The deep, dense purple colour foretells the ripe blueberry, blackberry and plum fruit, that is edged by hints of garrigue, pepper and violets. The wine is dry, with a little ripe-fruited sweetness and lightly sandy tannins. There is a little jammy character to the fruit on the palate, and a menthol note emerges before the finish. A very good wine that will benefit from at least another year or two in bottle.

LA FERME DU MONT PREMIÈRE CÔTE CÔTES DU RHÔNE AP 2015

Vintages #251645 • $17.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 89/100
This regional Côtes du Rhône shows attractive depth and character: sweet blueberry, blackberry and black cherry fruit, hints of damp earth and resin underneath a sprinkling of pepper and green herbs. Fine tannins frame the appealing, ripe fruit on the palate — it's big, bold, juicy and attractive. An excellent value.

JOSEPH DROUHIN BOURGOGNE PINOT NOIR AC 2015

Vintages #512574 • $24.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 89/100
A nicely balanced Pinot Noir from a warmer vintage. The wine is medium-depth ruby-red in colour, with a still-youthful red rim. Hints of wood spice, vanilla and damp earth underlie zesty blackberry, blueberry and black cherry fruit. Brightly acidic, with light tannins, the cheerful fruit on the palate is moderated by a gentle earthy-mushroom undertone. Wood is not much of a factor, and the juicy fruit lingers with the acids on the finish. Very attractive and elegant, and a fine basic red Burgundy.

DOMAINE DES NUGUES BEAUJOLAIS VILLAGES AC 2014

Vintages #526533 • $16.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 88/100
This is a charming and straightforward Beaujolais Villages. Rather dark ruby-red in colour, the nose presents ripe blueberry and blackberry fruit, edged by green herbs, pepper and violet notes. Crisp acidity and very fine tannins that have a noticeable grip embrace the juicy berry fruit on the palate. I love the restrained, crisp, tart fruit and the subtle savoury complexity — and a great value too at this price.

CASTELLO DI GABBIANO RISERVA CHIANTI CLASSICO DOCG 2013

Vintages #216309 • $22.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 89/100
I believe that this is the fourth release of this wine, and the additional time in bottle has added to the wine's impact. Nicely structured in a riserva-style, the oak presence that is starting to integrate well. More than medium-depth red in colour, with garnet showing on the rim, there is some pleasant leathery and black olive evolution, complementing a core of sour cherry and blackberry fruit, underpinned by a light resin and spice. Firm acidity balances the fine, resolving tannins that still coat the mouth, while the fruit on the palate take on a slight cough syrup liqueured note too. With surprising complexity for a riserva at this price level, this is a very good value indeed.

SAN FELICE CHIANTI CLASSICO DOCG 2015

Vintages #282996 • $19.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 89/100
This light, bright, charming Chianti Classico is 80% Sangiovese with Colorino and Pugnitello. Pretty cherry and blackberry fruit are complemented by a light edge of green herbs, resin and oak spice. Vivacious acidity and fine tannins carry the fruit on the palate and dry the tart, sour cherry finish. So pleasant and attractive, the perfect food wine for lighter fare — and a fine sipping wine too.

CLOUDY BAY PINOT NOIR 2015, Marlborough, South Island

Vintages #598813 • $46.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 89/100
This is a smoky, earthy wine, with pleasant blackberry and black cherry fruit. Firm acids and very fine tannins, combined with a little alcohol warmth, give this wine a surprising weight and yet in that context, it retains some real Pinot character. The fruit on the palate mingle with the tannins to emerge into a lingering, astringent finish. Very attractive, although the price is rather significant.
