Ten red wines from ten wine regions

"... ten red wines from Chianti, Chinon, Burgundy, the Aconcaqua Valley, California, Cahors, Salta, Piedmont, Bairrada and Rioja ..."

available in Ontario from January 20, 2018

With ten red wines from the January 20th Ontario release, we’ve found diversity, interest, and yes, continuing good values. The diversity is apparent, with wines from Chianti Classico and Chinon, Pinot Noirs from the Côtes de Nuits, Aconcagua Costa in Chile, and the Santa Lucia Highlands in California, Malbecs from Cahors and the Cafayate Valley in Salta, Argentina, then a Barbera from Asti, a Baga blend from Bairrada in Portugal, and a Crianza Rioja.

The common thread is my interest in balance and finesse, and I believe that the value should become apparent when you try them. There’s something here for almost everyone who enjoys red wine.

IL MOLINO DI GRACE RISERVA CHIANTI CLASSICO DOCG 2013

Vintages #382945 • $24.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 91/100
A classic vintage (a little cooler than many recent vintages, with a slightly later harvest), that implies excellent acidity and balanced alcohol. But here we have the yin of the beginning of bottle evolution meshing with the yang of ripe fruit: strawberry, raspberry and cherry fruit, originally tart and vibrant, that is starting to show some drying character, edged by encroaching leathery, savoury (black olive, celery salt), and cedary resin elements. I love the complexity, all carried by the juicy acidity that infuses the wine with life. Try this now to get a short-term view, and hide a few bottles in the cellar, for additional snapshots over the next five or more years.

DOMAINE RENÉ COULY CHINON AC 2014

Vintages #7286 • $22.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 89/100
This compelling wine shows the true varietal character of Cabernet Franc. It is rather deeply coloured purple-red, with a narrow red rim. Dense black cherry, blackberry and plum fruit aromas are edged by notes of green herbs, tobacco leaf and forest floor. Fine, slightly gritty tannins carry the brightly etched fruit, balanced by the firm acidity and the savoury undertones. So much life and verve, as the finish trails with fruit, tobacco leaf and drying tannins. A truly honest rendition of the grape, and a satisfying wine.

DOMAINE MOILLARD CÔTES DE NUITS-VILLAGES AC 2015

Vintages #527945 • $26.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 89/100
An elegant village Burgundy from the Côtes de Nuits. The nuanced cherry, raspberry and cranberry fruit is edged by a note of violets, and there's an earthy depth with just a hint of resin underneath. Bright acidity infuses the palate, the fruit is tart and fresh, and very fine, lightly chalky tannins linger on the finish. Elegant, tart, with a pleasant savoury edge.

ERRÁZURIZ ACONCAGUA COSTA PINOT NOIR 2016, Aconcagua Costa

Vintages #541151 • $24.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 89/100
This is a nicely crafted Pinot Noir from the cooler coastal region of the Aconcagua valley. It's still a youthful ruby red, with darker berry fruit reminiscent of raspberries, cranberries and blackberries, and a contrasting stemmy green edge. Fruit is fully ripe on the palate, yet the acids are brisk enough to give a sense of tart freshness. There's a little Pinot depth, a hint of earthy forest floor, and the merest suggestion of cedar towards the finish. Very new world in its bright fruitiness, but well structured and subtly complex.

SECRET CELLARS PINOT NOIR 2014, Santa Lucia Highlands

Vintages #539189 • $23.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 88/100
This is a Pinot Noir from the hills above Carmel and Monterey, close enough to the ocean to benefit from the cooling morning fog. It is medium-depth red, just starting to show garnet on the rim. The fruit — mostly strawberry and raspberry, with a suggestion of cherry — is fully ripe, but there is enough acidity to give the wine some life, and to balance the lightly gritty tannins. It's simple and straightforward, perhaps lacking a little Pinot depth, but certainly is very pleasant, and the price is appealing too.

CHÂTEAU VINCENS ORIGINE MALBEC 2014, AC Cahors

Vintages #343400 • $16.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 88/100
This Malbec from Cahors provides a modern take on the region, and is a pleasing contrast to its often heavier, riper and more alcoholic brethren from Argentina. It is still youthful in appearance, with its deep ruby-purple colour that stays purple to the very narrow rim. Aromas of ripe blackberry and plum fruit are complemented by pleasant floral-violet overtones, with a lightly cedary edge. Bright acidity and fine tannins frame the lively fruit on the palate, that maintains a core of freshness. It's medium weight, nicely structured, and full of life. A fine value.

ANKO FLOR DE CARDÓN MALBEC 2014, Cafayate Valley, Salta

Vintages #536706 • $19.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 88/100
This is an Argentinian Malbec from high altitude vineyards of the Cafayate Valley in Salta. It also reflects a more nuanced winemaking style, with constrained oak influence backing pretty raspberry and blackberry fruit on the nose with a hint of violets. It is dry, balanced, with some weight, and fine, resolving tannins. I liked this quite a bit — it's by no means delicate, but it has an understated balance.

MICHELE CHIARLO LE ORME 16 MONTHS BARBERA D'ASTI DOCG 2015

Vintages #265413 • $13.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 88/100
This is a delightful Barbera, with the bright acidity and modest tannic structure that defines the grape variety. The pretty floral nose, the tart and juicy blackberry and cherry fruit on the palate, and the crisp, lingering finish, together give more substance and life than you could reasonably expect at this price level. It's a cheerful, satisfying wine, perfect for sipping, and great with less complicated dishes that will welcome the defining acidity. What a value!

QUINTA DO VALDOEIRO TINTO 2012, DOC Bairrada

Vintages #39222 • $16.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 88/100
This is a ripe, modern Bairrada made from 50% Baga, still a dominant local grape in the region, with Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Touriga Nacional. It is deep purple-red in colour, only slightly lighter on the very narrow rim. Ripe blueberry, blackberry and plum fruit aromas are edged by dried herbs with a lightly cedary undertone. Grippy, mouthcoating tannins underpin the fruit-filled palate, where firm acids balance the slightly elevated alcohol, giving a dense warmth to the ripe fruit. Lots of life here, with a full-bodied ripeness that will be widely appreciated.

CUNE CRIANZA 2014, DOCa Rioja

Vintages #39925 • $16.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 88/100
The rather shy nose exhibits densely packed red cherry, strawberry and raspberry fruit with hints of spice and resin. The palate is bright with acidity that translates into juicy fruit, firmed by fine tannins that linger and dry the fruit on the finish. A good quality Rioja with a subtle weight that warrants another glass.
