November 28, 2015 Vintages Release Part 1: red wines

The November 28 release, along with the next one on December 12, are the two largest of the year. I certainly haven’t been able to taste all of the wines, but for this release I have selected eight of my favourite reds in Part 1 and eight whites in Part 2, with one of the latter being a sparkling wine.

There is no major over-riding theme here, but it turns out that the first three red wines are very good examples of left bank Bordeaux, all at relatively reasonable prices given the source. The remaining five wines are what I consider to be very good values. They range from the Wynn’s Coonawarra Shiraz, through three Italian wines (a Riserva Chianti Classico, a Langhe Rosso, and an IGT Rosso from Umbria), ending with a Syrah-Mourvèdre blend from Chile.

CHÂTEAU CLARKE 2009, AC Listrac-Médoc

Vintages #503904 • $39.95 • 750ml. • 91/100
Chateau Clarke was purchased by the Rothschild family in 1973, who replanted and refurbished the neglected vineyards in subsequent years. Unusually for the Médoc, the new plantings were dominated by Merlot, which was well-suited to the clay-limestone soils of the vineyards. The fine and generous 2009 vintage is reflected in this wine, with its ripe cherry, plum, blackberry and black currant fruit, that overshadows (but doesn't hide) a lightly cedary, herbal and earthy background to remind one of its origins. Acidity is firm enough to balance the dense but ripening tannins that linger on the finish. This is certainly drinking well now, but will benefit from another five or more years in the cellar.

L'EXPRESSON DE MARGAUX AC 2010

Vintages #431734 • $33.95 • 750ml. • 91/100
This is a very good (and relatively affordable) example of Margaux, made by the négociant Ulysse Cazabonne. The nose showed rather subdued dense, dark fruit, cedar and earth notes, but really began to open up on the palate. There the plum, blackberry and black currant flavours grew in complexity and richness, complemented by baking spice and chocolate, with a hint of tomato paste far underneath. Complex, rich, dense and still tannic, there is enough acidity to keep this in the game for many years. A very good "expression" for sure.

CHAPELLE DE POTENSAC 2010, AC Médoc

Vintages #434761 • $29.95 • 750ml. • 90/100
Here is another excellent 2010 from Bordeaux, this time from the Médoc. You will find rich, ripe plum, blackberry and raspberry aromas, with notes of fresh herbs, pepper and violets. Crisp, with balanced alcohol and elevated tannins, the rich and ripe fruit on the palate is complemented by pleasing dusty oak resin, vanilla, twigs and dry earth. Excellent.

WYNNS COONAWARRA ESTATE SHIRAZ 2012, Coonawarra, South Australia

Vintages #433060 • $22.95 • 750ml. • 89/100
The Coonawarra Estate Shiraz continues to offer excellent value. The wine is deep, dense ruby-purple. Mint and chcolate enhance the ripe blackberry, blueberry and plum fruit on the nose. Slightly elevated acidity balances the elevated alcohol, with rather firm and still grippy tannins. A resinous note underlies the ripe fruit on the palate, and the finish turns towards the savoury as black olives and an herbal-peppery note add to the stony-graphite finish.

CASTELLO DI GABBIANO RISERVA CHIANTI CLASSICO DOCG 2012

Vintages #216309 • $22.95 • 750ml. • 88.5/100
This is a rather modern style of Chianti Classico Riserva, featuring aromas of very ripe and slightly lifted cherry and blackberry fruit, violets, resin and baking spice. Firm acidity balances mouth-coating tannins, with some heat on the mid-palate, and dusty oak notes underpinning the ripe fruit, leading into a lengthy finish. A richer, riper style of Chianti Classico at a reasonable price.

STEFANO FARINA LE BRUME LANGHE ROSSO DOC 2010

Vintages #360073 • $16.95 • 750ml. • 89/100
This is a very well-priced blend of Nebbiolo and Barbera. On the nose you will find ripe and fresh aromas of red berries, cherries and blackberries, with suggestions of dried herbs and dry earth. Brisk acidity, balances the elevated tannins that are softening nicely, although they are still very evident. The lovely fruit on the palate lingers on a slightly warm, fruit-filled finish. A lovely, juicy and very pleasant wine, and a very good value.

ARNALDO-CAPRAI ANIMA UMBRA ROSSO 2012, IGT Umbria

Vintages #434266 • $19.95 • 750ml. • 88/100
This IGT Umbria Rosso is largely Sangiovese, supplemented by 15% Canaiolo. It shows medium ruby-red, with a pretty nose suggesting cherry, raspberry, blueberry and blackberry fruit — ripe, but retaining some freshness, with hints of vanilla and oak spice. Brisk acidity, balanced alcohol and tannins, all support the pleasant fruit that is lively and slightly tart on the palate. Overall this is light, fresh, juicy and very pleasant. Excellent value.

IN SITU SIGNATURE WINES HILLSIDE BLEND 2012, Aconcagua Valley

Vintages #431098 • $19.95 • 750ml. • 89/100
This Syrah-Mourvèdre blend shows deep, dark, ruby-red, with a nose that exudes blackberry and black currant fruit, surrounded by mint, chocolate, dried herbs and sage. The wine has balanced acidity with elevated alcohol and tannins. On the palate, rich blackberry and plum compote flavours blend with the mint, herbs and chocolate chip notes into a big, juicy and crowd-pleasing melange. Good value.
