Ten French wines in many styles and colours

"... two Champagnes, two Burgundies, two rosés, two Chablis, a Pouilly-Fumé and a Muscadet ..."

available in Ontario after May 27, 2017

My third set of recommendations from the May 27 Vintages release cover a diverse set of wines from France. The roster includes two fine Champagnes, two reds from Burgundy, two rosés from the Languedoc and Provence, and four whites from Chablis, Pouilly-Fumé and Muscadet.

The two Champagnes are a slightly older vintage wine, the 2006 Beaumont Des Crayeres Fleur De Prestige, and the Drappier Brut Nature Champagne Zero Dosage.

The two red wines are from Burgundy: the excellent 2013 Domaine Charles Audoin Clos Du Roy Marsannay, and the value-driven 2014 regional Bourgogne Pinot Noir from Nicolas Potel.

The two rosés are the 2016 Gérard Bertrand Côte Des Roses Rosé from the Languedoc, that is also available in a magnum format, and the 2016 Henri Gaillard Rosé AP Côtes de Provence.

The whites are headlined by two excellent Chablis: the 2014 Domaine Billaud-Simon Les Vaillons Chablis 1er Cru and the 2015 Domaine Chevallier Chablis. I also recommend the 2015 Guy Saget Pouilly-Fumé, a fine representative Sauvignon Blanc, and a very accessible Muscadet, the 2015 Clos De Beauregard Vieilles Vignes Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Sur Lie.

BEAUMONT DES CRAYERES FLEUR DE PRESTIGE CHAMPAGNE AC 2006

Vintages #483099 • $68.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 92/100
This 2006 vintage Champagne was disgorged on 2017/01/04. It shows as medium yellow with shades of old gold. The nose is surprisingly fresh, with bright lemon, grapefruit, red apple fruit and notes of dried herbs and toast. The wine is just off-dry, but the high acidity makes the wine crisp and slightly tart. The pleasant toast and brioche flavours frame the remarkably bright, fresh fruit on the palate, with added notes of white peaches, red berries and spice. It is nicely textured, with a firm, acidic and mineral finish. The producer is a CM — a Coopérative de manipulation — and the blend is 50% Chardonnay, 40% Pinot Meunier and 10% Pinot Meunier.

DRAPPIER BRUT NATURE CHAMPAGNE , Zero Dosage, AC

Vintages #179275 • $58.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 92/100
Medium yellow with highlights of old gold. Aromas of green apple, lemon-lime, honeydew and white peach are underpinned by notes of dried herbs and toast. Bone-dry, with high acidity, the wine is austere but still has some linear complexity, carrying its firm acidity into a stony-mineral finish. This is a style that I like very much, but of course with no sweetness from the dosage, it lacks the generosity that many demand from Champagne. 100% Pinot Noir, zero dosage, disgorged 01/17.

DOMAINE CHARLES AUDOIN CLOS DU ROY MARSANNAY AC 2013

Vintages #243857 • $47.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 90/100
The wine is medium-depth, bright red in colour. Delicate aromas of cherry, raspberry and blackberry fruit are complemented by hints of pepper, dried herbs and a subtle Pinot earthiness. It is dry with crisp acidity, balanced alcohol, and fine tannins. Fruit on the palate is crunchy though ripe, with a note of orange zest and an earthy undertone, and the finish is drying, chalky and mineral. A very good Marsannay.

NICOLAS POTEL BOURGOGNE PINOT NOIR AC 2014

Vintages #487397 • $21.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 88.5/100
The wine is medium-depth red, showing some garnet on the rim. Bright and warm strawberry, raspberry, blackberry and red cherry fruit fill the nose, with a subtle dried-earth undertone and a dusting of spice. It is dry, with crisp acidity, and fine tannins that yield a little chalky buildup. On the palate the fruit takes on a pleasant mushroom note to supplement the earthiness, and the finish is crisp and stony. There is enough structure to make this very food-worthy, while remaining pretty, pleasant and quaffable.

GÉRARD BERTRAND CÔTE DES ROSES ROSÉ 2016, AP Languedoc

Vintages #373985 • $17.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 89/100
The wine is light salmon-pink in colour. Vibrant aromas of red apples, strawberries, and lemon are complemented by notes of apple blossoms and dried herbs. Technically off-dry, the bright acidity hides most of the residual sugar, and the alcohol is nicely balanced. The fruit is generous on the palate, but a pleasant phenolic bitterness adds complexity and helps dry the finish. An approachable rosé with excellent structure. Highly recommended.

HENRI GAILLARD ROSÉ 2016, AP Côtes de Provence

Vintages #450825 • $16.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 88.5/100
Pale salmon in colour. A lightly herbal and floral attack is backed by aromas of strawberry, lemon and perfumed red apple. The wine is very dry, with bright acidity, balanced alcohol and a medium body. While the flavours don't jump from the glass, there is a pleasant firmness to the strawberry and cherry fruit on the palate that picks up a nuance of cherry pit bitterness on the finish. Harmonious and elegant.

DOMAINE BILLAUD-SIMON LES VAILLONS CHABLIS 1ER CRU AC 2014

Vintages #330175 • $39.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 91/100
The wine is bright medium straw in colour. Aromas suggest lees and wet stones, and almost an absence of fruit — just a little lemon-lime and green apple, with a dusting of green herbs. It is bone-dry, with vivid acidity and balanced alcohol. The palate comes alive with a subtle, creamy texture that expands the green apple and lemon-lime fruit and softens the acidity, continuing into a stony-salty finish. Textbook Chablis that reflects the cooler 2014 vintage.

DOMAINE CHEVALLIER CHABLIS AP 2015

Vintages #112227 • $24.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 89/100
Pale straw in colour, the nose presents firm green apple and lemon-lime aromas with a stony undertone. The wine is dry, with bright acidity, that softens and rounds with some slightly riper fruit on the palate. Certainly a firm backbone, but it is a little more approachable due to the warmth of the 2015 vintage. Very good example.

GUY SAGET POUILLY-FUMÉ AC 2015

Vintages #488890 • $26.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 89/100
The wine is bright but pale straw in colour. Aromas of dried herbs and white flowers complement lemon, green apple and honeydew melon fruit, and a suggestion of wet stones. Bone-dry, with firm acidity and medium alcohol, the palate is crisp and stony, with the citrus fruit taking on a grapefruit character, and focusing into a firm, flinty-citrus finish.

CLOS DE BEAUREGARD VIEILLES VIGNES MUSCADET SÈVRE ET MAINE 2015, Sur Lie, AC

Vintages #489955 • $16.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 88.5/100
The wine is a lighter straw-yellow colour. It has a surprisingly floral and fruit-forward nose for Muscadet, with bright green apple, lemon and honeydew melon notes over a background of wet stones. The fruit calms on the palate, where the lightly creamy texture and bright acidity set the tone. It is bone-dry, with some generosity, and a stony, salty finish. A very approachable example.
