Eight red wines

"... red wines from Toscana, Rioja, Marsannay, Bourgogne, Régnié, Adelaide Hills, Marlborough and the Niagara Peninsula ..."

available in Ontario from September 16, 2017

This is an interesting mix of new and old-world reds. The first wine is a compelling, super-premium 2013 Toscana red from Isole e Olena, and the second is a very fine and more moderately priced Rioja Riserva from CVNE. The remaining six wines are from Pinot Noir, Gamay, or in one case a blend of the two. Two are red Burgundies from René Bouvier, there is a value-priced Beaujolais from Régnié, then two new-world Pinot Noirs from the Adelaide Hills and Marlborough respectively, and finally a Pinot Noir-Gamay blend from Niagara.

ISOLE E OLENA CEPPARELLO 2013, IGT Toscana

Vintages #25650 • $99.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 93/100
This is a super-premium Tuscan Sangiovese from the somewhat cooler 2013 vintage. While it is rather deep red in colour, it certainly shows some welcome translucence. The nose is complex: pretty raspberry, cherry and blackberry fruit, delicate floral notes, herbal and savoury undertones, and a noticeable framework of oak spice. The wine is balanced and well-structured, with just a touch of heat on the palate, and fine, elegant tannins. While the fruit is juicy and fully ripe, the savoury elements emerge more strongly on the palate; the finish is lightly astringent and the tannins linger. This wine is very rewarding now, but if you enjoy aged wines, it is an ideal candidate for cellar time: the fine acidity should keep a core of freshness, while the fruit dries out a little and the savoury character grows. But this does come at a rather heady price.

CUNE RESERVA 2012, DOCa Rioja

Vintages #417659 • $26.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 89/100
This takes me back a little bit towards a somewhat more traditional style of Rioja, that is consistent with the winery style. The nose is more savoury than fruity — dried herbs, black olives, a little wood spice backed by cherry and plum aromas. Tannins are fine, acidity is brisk, the body is medium to full — nicely structured for the longer term. The fruit is both ripe and drying on the palate and the savoury elements are nicely integrated. The Tempranillo is supplemented by a mix of 15% Garnacha, Graciano and Mazuelo, and the wine is aged eighteen months in French and American oak with another 24 months in bottle. A well-crafted wine.

RENÉ BOUVIER LONGEROIES MARSANNAY AC 2014

Vintages #496620 • $46.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 90/100
Subtle ripe raspberry, blackberry and cherry aromas are backed by an earthy-twiggy undertone. There is certainly some generous wood treatment here, backing the piercing, ripe but fresh fruit on the palate, enlivened by the firm acidity and framed by fine, slightly chalky tannins, with a harmonious, slightly earthy depth. The finish lingers with blackberry and cherry fruit, and pleasant fine tannins.

RENÉ BOUVIER CUVÉE CHAPITRE SUIVANT BOURGOGNE AC 2014

Vintages #209601 • $24.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 88/100
Ruby red in colour, still a youthful red on the rim. I like the earthy, herbal and pepper notes that introduce fresh blackberry and plum aromas. Fine, lightly grippy tannins frame the tart but slightly riper fruit on the palate. The herbal and earthy notes add depth and complexity, and the finish is lean and drying. I continue to enjoy the 2014s!

PRINTEMPS FLEURI RÉGNIÉ AC 2015

Vintages #487157 • $16.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 88/100
Surprisingly deep purple, showing violet on the rim. Aromas of youthful and just-ripe blueberry and blackberry fruit precede herbal and damp earth undertones. The palate is nicely dry, with fresh acidity and light fine tannins, providing a perfect frame for the joyous blackberry fruit backed by some herbal and peppery complexity. The fine tannins and vibrant acidity focus into the fruit-tinged finish. Bright, lively and quaffable.

WOODSIDE PARK PINOT NOIR 2016, Adelaide Hills, South Australia

Vintages #478289 • $21.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 89/100
This is a ripe-fruited new-world Pinot. Just medium-depth red, with garnet showing on the rim, aromas evoke rather fresh raspberry, strawberry and black cherry fruit, with fresh herbs, underbrush, and a floral lift. The wine is dry, balanced, with lively acidity and fine tannins. Fruit is a little riper on the palate, with a satisfying earth and mushroom undertone, before the acidity focuses into a crisp, sour-edged finish. All-in-all quite pleasing.2793

TWO TAILS PINOT NOIR 2015, Marlborough, South Island

Vintages #496133 • $19.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 88/100
This is a very attractively priced Marlborough Pinot. Still a youthful red, the nose suggests ripe cherrry, strawberry, raspberry and blackberry fruit, violets, and a leafy undertone. Ripe, juicy fruit infuse the palate, the tannins are fine and ripe, and gather towards the finish, with sweetish vanilla-oak notes just a little obtrusive. Light, juicy and oh-so-quaffable.

THIRTY BENCH WINEMAKER'S BLEND DOUBLE NOIR 2015, VQA Niagara Peninsula

Vintages #493973 • $18.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 89/100
This is a welcome second release of the 2015 Double Noir, originally available in the April 1, 2017 Vintages release. It's an engaging Pinot Noir-Gamay blend from Thirty Bench's new "Winemaker's Blend" label. Bright acidity drives the pleasantly juicy cherry, raspberry and blackberry fruit, balanced nicely by a subtle, earthy, twiggy undertone. A little wood shows through, with some vanilla and roasted notes adding breadth and complexity. Perhaps not quite as lively as six months earlier on, so I'd drink this soon, while looking forward to the 2016 edition.
