Seven sparkling wines

"... sparkling wines from Champagne, Burgundy, Niagara, Luxembourg, the Western Cape and Valdobbiadene ..."

available in Ontario from September 16, 2017

September brings a fine assortment of sparkling wines: two from France — a Champagne and a Crémant de Bourgogne — then two from Niagara, one each from Luxembourg and South Africa, and a Prosecco from Valdobbiadene.  All but the Prosecco are traditional method sparklers made from Chardonnay or from Chardonnay-Pinot Noir blends. The Prosecco is the usual Charmat method, made from 100% Glera.

Stock up for the fall, and enjoy!

DUVAL LEROY BLANC DE BLANCS GRAND CRU BRUT CHAMPAGNE AC 2006

Vintages #482828 • $59.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 93/100
It is always so fascinating to taste older, vintage Champagnes, and this example, with at least ten years in bottle, is very rewarding. Complex aromas of brioche, toast, roasted almonds, and some bruising of the apple fruit are still backed by a firm, lemony undertone. The wine is dry, acidity is still bracing, all balanced by a rich, lightly creamy texture. The fruit is slightly bruised on the palate but still shows lots of life, inside the pleasant toasty and nutty framework. There is fine complexity in this 2006 Champagne, at a very reasonable price.

CAVE DE LUGNY CUVÉE MILLÉSIME BRUT CRÉMANT DE BOURGOGNE 2013, Traditional method, AC

Vintages #183764 • $21.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 89/100
Cave de Lugny is a very well-respected cooperative based in the Mâcon, with one of its three wineries specializing in sparkling wine. The 2013 Brut is a blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Pale straw in colour, the nose is concise and trim, with nuanced aromas of toast, lemon and apple. The wine is off-dry, but the zesty acidity nicely sops up the residual sugar, drying the palate towards the finish, while leaving a soft and lightly creamy texture. The fruit, though not finely etched, is pleasantly alive, and the finish is dry and stony. A very good value.

2027 CELLARS QUEENSTON ROAD VINEYARD BLANC DE BLANCS 2013, Traditional method, VQA St. David's Bench, Niagara-on-the-Lake

Vintages #520619 • $29.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 90/100
While the first bottle tasted was marred, the second and third showed very well. Lightly toasty and yeasty aromas edge a core of gentle lemon, yellow apple and pear fruit. The wine is dry, and a subtle creamy texture provides the perfect backdrop for bright acidity that infuses the palate with life. The finish is crisp and stony. A fine expression of Niagara Chardonnay in a sparkling framework.

TRIUS BRUT ROSÉ , Traditional method, VQA Niagara Peninsula

Vintages #184309 • $29.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 89/100
The attractive salmon colour presages pretty strawberry, apple and lemon fruit, that nestles over a light yeasty and toasty underpinning. Fully dry and enlivened by brisk acidity, the palate has a pleasant firmness, and the fruit, while showing again on the palate, subsumes into the toasty and slightly bitter finish. A "grown up" rosé sparkler, with excellent substance and breadth.

BERNARD-MASSARD BRUT CUVÉE DE L'ÉCUSSON , Traditional method, Luxembourg

Vintages #970970 • $19.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 88.5/100
This is a traditional method sparkling wine from Luxembourg. Light toast and bready notes frame simple lemon and apple fruit. The wine is brisk and refreshing, dryish with a softening sweetness nicely balanced by firm acidity. The fruit on the palate focuses into a lemony finish — simple, direct and pleasing.

GRAHAM BECK BRUT PINOT NOIR-CHARDONNAY SPARKLING , Traditional method, WO Western Cape

Vintages #593483 • $19.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 88.5/100
Graham Beck continues to provide a dependable and affordable sparkler. The nose is restrained, perhaps showing a hint of rubber, then toast, apple and lemon. The palate is bright and lively, lightly oxidative, with toasty-resin notes, while the finish is lemon-tinged and dry. This release was disgorged in April 2017.

BELCANTO DI BELLUSSI EXTRA DRY PROSECCO DI VALDOBBIADENE SUPERIORE DOCG

Vintages #53215 • $19.95 • 750ml. • WD Score 88/100
Bright pale straw in colour. Lively peach blossom, peach, red apple and lemon aromas replay brightly on the palate, enlivened by crisp acidity that partly dries the residual sugar and contrasts with the lightly creamy base. The finish is peach-tinged and stony. Very pleasant.
